How Crossplay Works in Minecraft Bedrock Edition
Minecraft Bedrock Edition supports one of gaming's most comprehensive crossplay implementations. Here's exactly how it works and how to take advantage of it.
What Is Bedrock Crossplay?
Crossplay means players on different platforms and devices can join the same Minecraft world simultaneously. In Bedrock Edition, this includes:
- Windows PC (Bedrock Edition)
- Xbox Series X/S
- Xbox One
- iOS (iPhone, iPad)
- Android
- Nintendo Switch
- PlayStation 4 & 5 (with some limitations)
All these platforms run the same Bedrock codebase and can play together seamlessly.
Crossplay Compatibility Table
| Platform | Crossplay With PC? | Crossplay With Xbox? | Crossplay With Mobile? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | โ | Yes | Yes |
| Xbox | Yes | โ | Yes |
| iOS | Yes | Yes | โ |
| Android | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Nintendo Switch | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| PlayStation | Yes (with Microsoft account) | Yes | Yes |
Requirements for Crossplay
Every player needs:
- Bedrock Edition on their platform (not Java)
- A Microsoft account (Xbox account) โ free to create
- An internet connection
- To be Xbox friends or have the host's Realm link
PlayStation Note
PlayStation players need a free Microsoft account linked in the game settings. They do not need PlayStation Plus for Minecraft crossplay with non-PlayStation players.
How to Play With Friends Across Platforms
Step 1: Add Each Other as Xbox Friends
- Open the Xbox app on PC or console
- Search for the friend's gamertag
- Send a friend request
- The friend accepts
On mobile, this can also be done within Minecraft's friend settings.
Step 2: Join the Game
Once you're Xbox friends:
- Open Minecraft Bedrock Edition
- Go to Play โ Friends
- You'll see your friend's active world listed
- Click Join to enter their world
Alternatively, the host can invite you directly from within their game.
Setting Up a Realm for Always-On Crossplay
For regular groups, Bedrock Realms is the best solution:
- Persistent server accessible 24/7
- Friends join anytime, even when the owner is offline
- Supports up to 10 players simultaneously
- ~$7.99/month
Create a Realm:
- Play โ Create New โ Create New Realm
- Set your realm name and access (friends only)
- Invite friends via gamertag
- Share the realm code as backup access
Troubleshooting Crossplay Issues
"Can't See Friend's World"
- Confirm both are using Bedrock Edition (not Java)
- Verify Xbox friend request was accepted
- Check that multiplayer is enabled in your Microsoft account settings
"Can't Join" on Child Accounts
Parent must enable in account.microsoft.com/family:
- Join multiplayer games: On
- Xbox Network communications: Allow
"Connection Failed"
- Check router โ port UDP 19132 should be open
- Try joining via a Realm instead of direct friend join
- Restart Minecraft and try again
Java Edition: No Crossplay
A critical distinction: Java Edition does not support crossplay with Bedrock, Xbox, mobile, or Switch. Java players can only play with other Java players on PC.
If your friends are on Xbox or mobile, you need to use Bedrock Edition โ which is included in the Minecraft Java & Bedrock Edition purchase from Marix.
One Global key from Marix gives you both editions. Start playing Bedrock with your cross-platform friends today โ instant delivery, no foreign card needed.
