How to Play Minecraft with Friends Across PC and Xbox
Minecraft's crossplay feature lets players on PC (Windows), Xbox, mobile, and Nintendo Switch all play together in the same world. Here's your complete guide to setting it up.
What Crossplay Requires
Important: Crossplay only works in Bedrock Edition. Java Edition is PC-only and does not support cross-platform play with Xbox or other platforms.
To play together across PC and Xbox, both players need:
- Bedrock Edition on their respective platforms (included with Minecraft Java & Bedrock Edition purchase)
- A Microsoft account (Xbox account)
- Both accounts signed in during gameplay
Method 1: Xbox Friends List
The simplest way to play together:
On Xbox
- Press the Xbox button
- Go to Friends & Community
- Find your PC friend's gamertag and send a friend request
On PC (Xbox App)
- Open the Xbox app on Windows
- Click the Social tab
- Search for your friend's gamertag
- Send a friend request
Once you're friends:
- Open Minecraft on your device
- In the main menu, go to Play โ Friends
- You'll see your friend's active world
- Click Join to enter
Method 2: Invite from Within Game
While in a Minecraft world:
- Press Escape to open the menu
- Click Invite to Game
- Select your friend from the list
- They receive a notification to join
This works across platforms โ your Xbox friend gets the invite on their console.
Method 3: Minecraft Realms
Realms is Minecraft's official subscription-based server hosting:
- Creates a persistent world that friends can join anytime
- Works across all Bedrock platforms (PC, Xbox, mobile, Switch)
- Up to 10 friends can play simultaneously
- ~$7.99/month for a Bedrock Realm
How to set up:
- Go to Play โ Create New โ Create New Realm
- Set your Realm name and settings
- Invite friends via gamertag
- They can join anytime the Realm is active, even when you're offline
Method 4: LAN (Local Network)
If you and your friend are on the same Wi-Fi network:
- One player opens a world and enables LAN visibility in settings
- Other players (PC or Xbox on same network) see the world under Friends tab
- No internet required
Crossplay Compatibility Matrix
| Your Platform | Friends on Xbox | Friends on Mobile | Friends on Switch | Friends on PC Bedrock |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PC (Bedrock) | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Xbox | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| PC (Java) | No | No | No | Java only |
Common Crossplay Issues
"Can't see friend's world"
- Both players must be on Bedrock Edition (not Java)
- Ensure you're actual Xbox friends (not just in-game)
- Check that Join Multiplayer Games is enabled in account settings
"Invitation not received"
- Check Microsoft account communication settings
- The inviting player's world must have multiplayer enabled
- Try rejoining the game and re-inviting
"Connection failed"
- Check both players' internet connection
- Temporarily disable firewall for testing
- Ensure Minecraft is allowed through your firewall
Enabling Multiplayer on Your Account
For Microsoft accounts under 18, multiplayer must be enabled by a parent:
- Go to account.microsoft.com/family
- Select the child account
- Enable Join multiplayer games
- Enable Xbox Network communications
Tips for Smooth Crossplay
- Use Realms for the most reliable experience
- The player hosting a world should have a stable internet connection
- For large groups, a dedicated server is more reliable than Realms
