Does Airalo eSIM Work in China? Great Firewall Bypass Explained
China is the one major tourist destination with the Great Firewall (GFW): Google, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram and most Western services are blocked at the local carrier level. Buy a China Mobile SIM in Beijing and you get fast 5G — but with half your usual apps gone. Airalo handles this differently.

Coverage and speeds — the Great Firewall reality
Airalo Chinacom roams via Hong Kong's CMHK (China Mobile Hong Kong), not directly via mainland networks. What this means in practice:
- Your traffic exits through Hong Kong, where the firewall doesn't apply.
- Google, YouTube, Gmail, WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, Facebook — they work without a VPN.
- Twitter/X, Reddit, Discord — they work.
- Apple Maps and Google Maps work — but Google's China map data is inaccurate (a Google issue, not a firewall one).
Coverage via CMHK delivers 4G+ in major cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Xi'an, Hangzhou. 5G on Airalo China is usually not available (because roaming uses 4G LTE channels).
Speeds are lower than a local China Mobile SIM but adequate for messengers, maps and 720p video. Ping is higher because traffic detours through Hong Kong.
Important: VPN backup is still required
Even though Airalo Chinacom officially bypasses the GFW, there are cases where:
- A specific service is temporarily blocked (depends on current CMHK restrictions)
- In Xi'an or Chongqing the roaming jumps to a mainland carrier — and the firewall kicks in
- During politically sensitive dates (anniversaries, party congresses) China tightens filtering
Install a VPN (e.g., Astrill or Mullvad with obfuscation) before you fly, while you're still in a country where Western VPN apps can be downloaded from App Store / Google Play. App stores inside China are Chinese-only — you can't download Western VPNs there.
Installation and activation
Install at home before departure over Wi-Fi — inside China, non-Chinese Apple ID and Google Play accounts work with limitations, and adding eSIM on the spot is unreliable.
iOS: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Airalo QR → "China". Turn off roaming on the primary SIM (otherwise the phone may switch to China Mobile and you'll hit the GFW).
Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add eSIM → QR. APN usually cmhk or auto-populated.
Airalo Chinacom vs. local China Mobile SIM
A local China Mobile SIM at Beijing airport: ¥100–200 for 30 GB / 30 days (≈$14–28). Cheaper and faster. But the GFW is fully active: no Google, no YouTube, no WhatsApp. Only Chinese WeChat, Baidu, Youku and the like. For most tourists Airalo Chinacom is easier — even at a markup.
