Airalo eSIM Hotspot and Tethering โ How to Set Up on iPhone and Android
Traveling with a laptop, tablet, or a partner who doesn't have their own eSIM? You'll need to share your connection. Airalo eSIMs allow tethering almost everywhere, but with a few quirks: some regional packages throttle tethered traffic, others don't. Here's how to turn it on, where it's limited, and how to avoid burning through your plan in one afternoon.
How It Works
Tethering turns your phone into a Wi-Fi hotspot for other devices. Technically the data still flows through your phone's eSIM, but the carrier can detect tethered traffic via TTL flags or User-Agent analysis.
Most modern Airalo plans don't distinguish between your own traffic and tethered traffic โ one pool, one allowance. A few carriers (notably T-Mobile US) throttle tethered traffic after a threshold.
Where Tethering Works at Full Speed
| Region | Tethering | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Europe (Discover, Eurolink) | Full speed | 4G/5G available |
| Turkey (Turknet) | Full speed | No restrictions |
| Japan, Korea, Singapore | Full speed | High 5G speeds |
| Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia | Full speed | Stable 4G |
| Global (Discover, Discover+) | Full speed | Speed varies by country |
| UAE (Etihalat) | Allowed | 4G/5G available |
Where Throttling May Hit
- US via T-Mobile โ after 30 GB of tethered traffic, throttle to 600 Kbps may kick in. Most users never see this.
- Some Asialink/Hablal regional packs โ forum reports of throttling after 7โ10 GB, but rare.
In 99% of cases, you won't run into restrictions โ Airalo plans are sized for typical tourist usage.
What You Need to Set Up
iPhone (iOS 17/18)
- Settings โ Cellular โ tap Airalo eSIM
- Enable Cellular Data for that line
- Back to Settings โ Personal Hotspot
- Toggle Allow Others to Join
- Set a Wi-Fi password (8+ characters)
- On the second device, find the network named after your iPhone, enter the password
Tip: the network name equals your iPhone name (Settings โ General โ About โ Name). Rename it if you want something custom.
Android (Samsung, Pixel, Xiaomi)
- Settings โ Connections / Network & internet โ Hotspot and tethering
- Turn on Mobile Hotspot
- Open Hotspot setup โ set name and password
- Use the 2.4 GHz band for compatibility (5 GHz is faster but not all devices see it)
- Connect from your second device
Important: in settings, make sure Airalo eSIM is set as the default data line, or tethering will route through your home SIM on roaming.
How Not to Burn Your Plan in a Day
Tethered laptops burn data faster than phones โ desktop sites are heavier:
| Activity | Per hour |
|---|---|
| Email, messengers | 10โ50 MB |
| Browsing, news | 100โ300 MB |
| YouTube 720p | 700 MB |
| YouTube 1080p | 1.5 GB |
| Zoom video calls | 500โ900 MB |
| OS updates | 1โ10 GB |
Do this:
- Disable cloud sync on the laptop (Dropbox, iCloud, Google Drive) โ background uploads can eat gigabytes
- Defer system updates until you're on hotel Wi-Fi
- Cap YouTube at 480p instead of auto
- Turn off video autoplay in social apps
Where to Get a Reliable eSIM
On Marix, you get the same original Airalo packages with the same QR code as on Airalo's site, paid with regional cards, SBP, or USDT. If you'll be tethering for multiple devices, grab 5โ10 GB of Airalo Regional or Global for a buffer. Setup takes minutes, and tethering works as soon as the eSIM attaches to a network.
