Airalo eSIM for Bali and Indonesia — Plans, Coverage, Setup
The queues at Denpasar arrivals for a Telkomsel SIM card are a well-known Bali ritual. Local sellers at the airport exit charge 200,000–350,000 IDR (≈$13–22) for the installation and ask for your passport. Coverage and speeds
Airalo Indonesia roams on Telkomsel (the country's main carrier) and Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison. This is the best coverage combination for tourists.
- Bali — Denpasar, Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Sanur — solid 4G+, with 5G in central Denpasar.
- Ubud, Tegallalang, Sidemen — 4G in villages, weaker on rice terraces and in jungle.
- Nusa Penida and Lembongan — 4G at piers and popular beaches, 3G in the islands' interior.
- Jakarta — excellent 5G/4G LTE across the metropolis.
- Lombok — 4G in Senggigi and Kuta Lombok; the Gili islands work but with drops; Mount Rinjani is mostly without signal.
- Komodo, Raja Ampat, remote islands — 3G or nothing, eSIM is largely decorative there.
Tethering is allowed. Voice via messengers only.
Installation and activation
Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi (Bali has Wi-Fi at Denpasar, but having working data in your first 30 minutes is worth it). Activate after landing once the phone latches onto Telkomsel.
iOS: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Airalo QR → name it "Bali". Data on Airalo, disable roaming on the primary SIM.
Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add eSIM → QR. APN usually auto-populates (internet or airalo).

Telkomsel tourist SIMs at the terminal exit run 250,000–350,000 IDR for 15 GB / 30 days (≈$16–22). Cheaper per GB, but: 30–60 min queue after a red-eye, passport required, and the "tourist markup" sometimes applies. Airalo costs more per GB but your data works before you've pulled your bag off the belt — which usually matters more than saving $5.
