Airalo eSIM for Malaysia โ Sambungan Plans, Celcom/Maxis Coverage
Malaysia is a natural multi-stop route โ Kuala Lumpur via KLIA or KLIA2 (AirAsia), then onwards to Langkawi, Penang or Borneo. Local Hotlink/Yes prepaid SIMs require either a MyKad resident card or a lengthy passport-verification form. Airalo Sambungan skips the paperwork: the eSIM activates on landing at KL, and Grab, Foodpanda and Waze work immediately.
Available Airalo packages
The Malaysia plan is called Sambungan. Lineup:
- 1 GB / 7 days โ $4.50
- 3 GB / 30 days โ $9
- 5 GB / 30 days โ $13
- 10 GB / 30 days โ $19
- 20 GB / 30 days โ $32
- Unlimited / 7 days โ around $24 (FUP, ~1 GB/day)
For a 10-day KL โ Penang โ Langkawi route 10 GB is enough. For a Borneo trip with Kota Kinabalu and long drives, go for 20 GB (maps and routing eat data).
Coverage and speeds
Airalo Sambungan roams on Celcom Axiata (the main network on Borneo) and Maxis (the leader on the peninsula). DiGi isn't directly in the Airalo roaming list, but Celcom and Maxis cover the entire country.
- Kuala Lumpur โ solid 4G+/5G in KLCC, Bukit Bintang, Mont Kiara. 4G everywhere in KL Sentral and on LRT/MRT.
- Penang (Georgetown, Batu Ferringhi) โ 4G+ across the island. Weaker at the Penang Hill summit.
- Langkawi โ 4G in Pantai Cenang and Kuah, weaker on remote beaches. The Gunung Mat Cincang cable car loses signal halfway up.
- Malacca โ 4G in the historical centre.
- Kota Kinabalu (Sabah, Borneo) โ 4G in town and at Sutera Harbour. Above 2,500 m on Mount Kinabalu โ no signal.
- Kuching (Sarawak) โ 4G in town; weaker at Bako National Park.
Tethering is allowed. No Malaysian number issued โ not critical for Grab Malaysia bookings (they accept international numbers).
Installation and activation
Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi before departure, activate after landing at KLIA, Penang (PEN) or Kota Kinabalu (BKI).
iOS: Settings โ Cellular โ Add eSIM โ Airalo QR โ "Malaysia". Data on Airalo, primary SIM roaming off.
Android: Settings โ Network & internet โ SIMs โ Add eSIM โ QR. APN auto-populates.
A note on Singapore โ Malaysia routes
The Singapore (Singgapura) eSIM does not work in Malaysia and vice versa. If you're crossing the Woodlands/Tuas border into Johor, you need a separate Sambungan plan. Alternative: Airalo's regional Asialink pack covers several ASEAN countries, but it's more expensive per GB.
Airalo vs. Hotlink/Yes at KLIA
Hotlink prepaid SIM at KLIA Terminal 1/2 is RM30โ60 (โ$7โ14) for 15โ30 GB / 30 days. Cheaper per GB. But: 15โ30 minutes of passport-photo verification, queues after late flights. Airalo Sambungan turns on the moment you land โ which matters if you have a 2-hour AirAsia connection to Langkawi.
Where to buy
Buy Airalo eSIM via Marix โ pay locally without foreign cards. The Sambungan QR code arrives within minutes; install before departure, activate in Malaysia.
