Airalo eSIM for the Philippines โ Mabuhay Plans, Globe/Smart Coverage
Landing in Manila (NAIA) or Mactan-Cebu with a 40โ60 minute immigration queue, then another 20โ30 minutes at the Globe or Smart counter for a SIM, is the typical first-day pattern that eats hours. Airalo Mabuhay drops that second stage entirely: the eSIM activates at landing, and you step out of the gate with Grab working, GCash notifications flowing, and Google Maps live.
Available Airalo packages
The Philippines plan is called Mabuhay. Lineup:
- 1 GB / 7 days โ $4.50
- 3 GB / 30 days โ $9.50
- 5 GB / 30 days โ $14
- 10 GB / 30 days โ $22
- 20 GB / 30 days โ $37
- Unlimited / 7 days โ around $24 (FUP, ~1 GB/day)
For a Manila โ Cebu โ Boracay route over 10 days, 10 GB is usually enough. For island-hopping in Palawan (El Nido, Coron), 5 GB can suffice because remote islands have almost no signal anyway.
Coverage and speeds
Airalo Mabuhay roams on Globe Telecom (the country's main network) and Smart Communications โ the two largest Philippine carriers with nearly identical footprint.
- Manila (Metro Manila, BGC, Makati) โ solid 4G+, with 5G in BGC and Makati.
- Cebu City and Mactan โ 4G in town, 4G+ at main beaches (Mapatusu, Shangri-La).
- Boracay โ 4G in Station 1/2/3, weaker on remote beaches like Puka.
- Palawan โ El Nido โ 4G in town, but the moment you leave for a lagoon tour by boat โ 3G or nothing. That's the nature reserve reality.
- Coron, Siargao, Bohol โ 4G in populated areas, weaker on remote beaches and mountains.
- Typhoon seasons (JulyโOctober) โ networks can drop temporarily for 1โ3 days after major storms.
Tethering is allowed. No local number issued.
Installation and activation
Install the eSIM before departure on Wi-Fi, activate after landing at NAIA, Mactan or Clark.
iOS: Settings โ Cellular โ Add eSIM โ Airalo QR โ "Philippines". Data on Airalo, primary SIM roaming off.
Android: Settings โ Network & internet โ SIMs โ Add eSIM โ QR. APN auto-populates (internet or airalo).
Airalo vs. SIM at Manila airport
Globe Tourist SIM at NAIA Terminal 1/3 costs โฑ500โ1000 (โ$9โ18) for 8โ15 GB / 30 days. Cheaper per GB than Airalo, but: 20โ40 min queue after a red-eye, passport required, 10 minutes of paperwork. Airalo Mabuhay gives you working internet from landing โ critical if you have a tight connection to a domestic flight (NAIA โ CEB same day): you can Grab between terminals without delays.
Where to buy
Buy Airalo eSIM via Marix โ pay locally without juggling foreign cards. The Mabuhay QR arrives by email within minutes; install before departure, activate in the Philippines.
