Airalo eSIM for Thailand โ Tha-li Plans, Coverage and Activation
Landed in Bangkok or Phuket and don't want to spend the first hour of your trip queueing at an AIS kiosk? An Airalo eSIM solves that: you buy the plan online before departure, the QR code lands in your inbox, and your data is live the moment your aircraft touches down. No carrier roaming bills, no passport scans at the airport counter.
Available Airalo packages
The Thailand plan is called Tha-li. The standard lineup:
- 1 GB / 7 days โ $4.50
- 3 GB / 30 days โ $11
- 5 GB / 30 days โ $16
- 10 GB / 30 days โ $26
- 20 GB / 30 days โ $42
- Unlimited / 7 days โ around $24 (FUP applies, throttled after ~1 GB/day)
For a two-week vacation with average usage (maps, messengers, occasional social) 5 GB is usually enough. If you're streaming YouTube in the hotel or working remotely, go for 10โ20 GB.
Coverage and speeds
Airalo Tha-li roams on AIS (primary) and True Move H. These are Thailand's two largest networks, and the coverage map is effectively identical to a local SIM.
- Bangkok โ solid 5G in central districts (Sukhumvit, Siam, Asok), 4G+ in residential areas.
- Phuket โ 4G everywhere on major beaches (Patong, Karon, Kata, Mai Khao). Remote beaches and hills can drop to 3G.
- Krabi and islands (Phi Phi, Lanta) โ 4G in main towns, occasional dead zones on boat transfers.
- Chiang Mai โ 4G/5G in the city, weaker in the Doi Suthep hills.
Tethering is supported. The eSIM is data-only โ no Thai number for SMS โ but WhatsApp and Telegram calls work fine.
Installation and activation
Install the eSIM before you fly (over home Wi-Fi). Activate after landing in Thailand once the phone catches a local signal.
iOS: Settings โ Cellular โ Add eSIM โ Use QR Code โ scan the Airalo code. Label it "Thailand", keep your home SIM for calls, set Airalo as the data line, and turn off data roaming on the primary SIM.
Android (Pixel/Samsung): Settings โ Network & internet โ SIMs โ Add eSIM โ scan QR. After landing, double-check APN per Airalo's instructions (usually internet or auto-populated).
Airalo vs. airport SIM at Suvarnabhumi
AIS/True kiosks in Bangkok arrivals charge 299โ599 THB (โ$9โ18) for 8โ15 GB tourist packs. Cheaper per GB than Airalo, but they only open 7:00โ23:00, require a passport, and queues after a red-eye flight can run 30โ60 minutes. Airalo wins because your data works the moment you step off the plane โ book a Grab, message the hotel, and head straight for baggage claim.
