Why not every foreign card works in the App Store
The App Store is not a single store โ it is 175+ regional storefronts, each with its own prices, app catalog, and payment method requirements. When you add a card to your Apple ID, the system checks whether it is compatible with your account's region. A card may be issued by a major international bank and accepted worldwide, yet still be rejected in a specific App Store.
This is not a bug or an oversight. Apple deliberately limits the use of cards from other regions to maintain regional pricing and ensure correct taxation.
Causes of incompatibility
Payment network not supported. Russian Mir cards are accepted almost nowhere outside Russia. UnionPay works only in regions with specific support. Visa and Mastercard are broadly supported but not universally.
Card's country of issue doesn't match the Apple ID region. Even a Visa card issued by a bank in one country will not be accepted in another country's App Store.
Virtual cards without a billing address. Some virtual card providers do not attach a real address to their cards, making them incompatible with Apple's verification.
Disposable cards. Apple sometimes rejects cards that its system identifies as single-use or prepaid without a persistent balance.
Which cards work in the App Store
Visa and Mastercard issued in the Apple ID region's country. The most reliable option. If your Apple ID is registered in the US, you need a card from a US bank; in Turkey, from a Turkish bank.
Virtual cards with a correct billing address. Virtual Visa/Mastercard cards that have a billing address in the Apple ID region's country work the same as physical cards. The billing address match is the key requirement.
App Store gift cards. Technically not bank cards, but they allow you to top up your Apple ID balance and make purchases without linking a bank card.
Step-by-step fix
- Identify your Apple ID region โ your card must match it.
- Choose a card issued in the required country. If you don't have a physical card, consider a virtual card with a billing address in the target country.
- Verify the billing address when adding the card โ it must match the bank's records.
- Make sure the card is not single-use. Use a permanent virtual or physical card.
- If the card is rejected, try an App Store gift card for the right region as a temporary solution.
FAQ
Does a Revolut card work in the App Store? Revolut issues cards with a UK or European billing address. They may work in UK or European App Stores, but not in the US or other stores without the correct setup.
Why is my Visa rejected even though Visa is supported in my region? The issue may not be the payment network, but the card's country of issue or the billing address. Check both parameters.
Are there cards that work across multiple App Store regions simultaneously? No. Apple ties a payment method to one account region. To operate in a different region, you must either change your Apple ID region or use a separate account.
