Home Xbox for account-share โ why it matters and how to set it
When you buy an Xbox game via account-share โ the seller hands you login/password for their Microsoft account with the game in its library โ there is one step that changes everything: setting your console as My home Xbox for that account.
Without Home Xbox: you're hostage to the seller, the game only works as long as they don't change the password. With Home Xbox: your own profile plays the game offline, even if the seller's account disappears tomorrow.
What Home Xbox actually is
A Microsoft feature designed to share your game library with everyone on a single console. Originally meant for families: dad buys a game, kids play under their own profiles without a separate purchase.
A single Microsoft account can designate Home Xbox 5 times in a 365-day window (the "5 swaps a year" rule). That's why reseller-style sharing is sustainable โ there's a real limit on resets.
| Guest mode (no Home Xbox) | Home Xbox |
|---|---|
| Game launches only under seller's profile | Game launches under your profile |
| Online sign-in needed every time | Plays offline |
| Seller changes password = access lost | Game and saves stay on the console |
| Achievements go to the seller | Achievements go to you |
| Cloud saves on seller's account | Local saves under your profile |
How to set Home Xbox โ step by step
After you've signed in as the seller and installed the game:
- Press Xbox button on the controller.
- Profile & system โ Settings โ General โ Personalization โ My home Xbox.
- Pick Make this my home Xbox.
- Confirm with A.
Xbox shows "This Xbox is now your home Xbox". From now on, the seller's library is available to every profile on the console.
Verify it works
- Sign out from the seller's account: Profile & system โ Sign out.
- Sign in under your personal Xbox account.
- Open My games & apps โ Full library โ All owned games.
- The seller's game should be in the list. Launch it.
If it launches โ Home Xbox is working, you're good.
Things to know
- One Home Xbox at a time: setting Home Xbox to the seller means your own Microsoft account stops sharing its games from this console. In practice it's a non-issue โ your own games are usually activated directly anyway.
- 5 swaps a year: you can swap Home Xbox 5 times per 365 days. Keep some slots in reserve if you buy shares often.
- Local only: Home Xbox works only on the console where it's set. Cloud Gaming or another Xbox won't run the game.
What happens if the seller deletes the account
Even if the seller fully deletes their Microsoft account, the game in the Home Xbox library keeps launching in offline mode for as long as the console works. This isn't a bug โ it's legitimate Microsoft behavior.
In online mode (multiplayer, license recheck after a system update) there can be issues โ but single-player campaigns run without complaint.
