Google's household rule
YouTube Premium Family is tied to Google Family Group. Google requires:
- every member to have a Google account aged 13+;
- a maximum of 5 additional members;
- members to live in the same household as the plan owner;
- periodic household verification via IP, sign-in history, and devices;
- matching account regions for the owner and all members.
"Same household" is the soft requirement here. Google doesn't physically check residence: it verifies through periodic sign-ins from the owner's IP or registered device, every 30–60 days.
How to add members to a Family plan
- Open families.google.com on the owner account.
- Click Manage family group → Invite member.
- Enter the Gmail address of each member, up to 5 people.
- The member accepts the invite and automatically gains YouTube Premium.
- Verify in [YouTube Settings] → [Membership] that each member's status reads Premium Family.
Every member keeps their own Google account, watch history, recommendations, playlists, and channel. Family doesn't share accounts — it only propagates Premium status across them.

Gotchas with Family from abroad
The biggest one is region matching. If the Family owner is on a Ukrainian account, every one of the 5 members must also be on a Ukrainian Google account. Adding a Russian account into a Ukrainian Family will fail with a region mismatch error.
The fix is to move all member accounts to the target region first, via [Google Payments] → [Settings] → [Country]. Region changes are limited to once per year, so plan the Family rollout ahead of time.
