Should You Activate Airalo eSIM Before Travel? Install vs Activate Rule
One of the most common worries: "If I install Airalo at home, does the timer already start?" Short answer: no. Installation and activation are different events. The Airalo plan's validity starts automatically when your phone first registers on a network in the destination country — not when you scan the QR.
What you need to know
- Install writes the Airalo profile into your phone's memory. Done at home over Wi-Fi.
- Activation is the first connection to one of the mobile networks named in the plan (for example Turkcell for Turkey). The day count starts from this moment.
- Inside the Airalo app every plan shows: "Validity: X days from first connection" — not from purchase, not from install.
The correct install + activation flow
- At home, before flying — buy the eSIM and get the QR by email.
- At home, before flying — install the profile via Settings → Cellular (iPhone) or SIM Manager (Android).
- At home, before flying — set Airalo as the data line, enable Data Roaming for Airalo, disable data on your home SIM.
- In transit / on the plane — turn mobile data off on the Airalo line (or leave Airplane mode on). This prevents accidental connection.
- After landing — leave the plane, power up, turn off Airplane mode. Airalo registers on the local network automatically.
- At that moment the plan activates and the validity countdown starts.
What does NOT trigger activation
- Installing the eSIM via QR at home
- Storing the profile in memory without an active line
- Using Wi-Fi on the phone (Airalo only counts mobile network registrations)
- Registering on your home carrier's roaming network
What DOES trigger activation
- The Airalo eSIM first connects to one of the plan's listed networks
- Any data exchange over the Airalo line (even background syncing)
- Network registration when you power on the phone after landing
Can you force activation at home?
No. Airalo does not carry coverage agreements inside Russia or most CIS countries, so the eSIM simply cannot register on an approved network until you reach the plan's coverage area. This is a built-in safeguard against accidental activation.
How long to wait after landing
Network registration usually takes 1-10 minutes. If after 15 minutes the eSIM has not connected:
- Power the phone off and on
- iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Airalo → Network Selection → turn off Automatic and pick a carrier from the plan instructions
- Android: Settings → Connections → Mobile networks → Network operators → manual pick
