When to Install Airalo eSIM — At Home, at the Airport, or After Landing
Simple rule: install the eSIM at home while you have Wi-Fi, the plan activates automatically once you land. Installation needs internet (the profile downloads from Airalo servers), and at the arrival airport without internet you are stuck in a loop — to install Airalo you need Wi-Fi, but you wanted Wi-Fi precisely through this eSIM.
What you need
- Stable Wi-Fi at home or in the office
- 10 spare minutes
- Airalo QR code (emailed after payment)
- A compatible, unlocked phone
Correct install schedule
1-7 days before departure
- Buy the eSIM and receive the QR by email.
- Open the QR on a laptop or tablet.
- Install the profile on your phone using the steps for your model.
- Set Airalo as the data line.
- Do not turn on mobile data for Airalo yet — leave the line off until you land.
- Make sure Data Roaming for Airalo is enabled in settings.
On departure day at home
- Confirm the Airalo profile is in place: Settings → Cellular (iPhone) or SIM Manager (Android).
- Switch on Airplane mode before heading to the airport.
At the arrival airport
- Get off the plane.
- Turn off Airplane mode.
- Wait 1-5 minutes — Airalo registers on a local network automatically.
- If the eSIM icon does not appear — pick a carrier manually via Network Selection.
Common timing mistakes
Installing at the arrival airport without Wi-Fi
The most common mistake. Many airports offer free Wi-Fi but require SMS verification to a local number you do not have. You end up in a loop: need internet to install Airalo, need Airalo to get internet.
Fix: install at home.
Installing right before boarding
If departure-airport Wi-Fi is flaky and the QR fails to load, the eSIM is left uninstalled. You fly without mobile data.
Fix: install one or two days before takeoff.
Accidentally activating Airalo at home
If Airalo has data turned on and you pass through a border area covered by one of its partner networks, the plan activates and the validity timer starts.
Fix: install the profile but keep Cellular Data set to your home SIM until you land. Switch to Airalo only at the destination.
Deleting the profile before departure
If you delete the eSIM by mistake, you need to reinstall. Airalo allows one free reinstall through the app — but it needs internet.
Fix: leave the profile alone after install until you arrive.
After landing
- Turn on data for the Airalo line: Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data → Airalo.
- If data does not appear — pick a carrier manually from the plan's list.
- Disable mobile data on the home SIM so you do not accidentally use its roaming.
