Why Russian bank cards don't work for Apple payments
Apple's payment infrastructure relies on Visa and Mastercard international processing networks. Since March 2022, both networks suspended operations in Russia, which means Russian-issued Visa and Mastercard cards cannot make international payments โ including to Apple.
Russian Mir cards are not accepted by Apple at all. Foreign virtual cards issued by Russian services often get blocked at the Apple billing stage. Attempting to add a Russian card to your Apple ID produces a "This card is not supported" or "Billing information is not valid" error.
The only fully working method to add money to a Russian Apple ID balance in 2026 is through a gift card code.
What you need before you start
- An iPhone, iPad, or Mac (the App Store app or System Settings)
- Your Apple ID login and password
- A gift card code for the correct region (Russian Apple ID requires a Russian-region card)
- Your order confirmation email from Marix with the code
You do not need a VPN. You do not need to change your Apple ID country. A Russian Apple ID accepts Russian-region gift card codes directly.
Step 1. Buy the right gift card
Russian Apple Gift Cards are denominated in rubles and are tied to Russian App Store accounts. Do not purchase UK, US, or Turkish gift cards for a Russian Apple ID โ they will fail at redemption with a "This code is not valid in your region" error.
At Marix, select the denomination you need:
- 169 RUB โ covers one month of iCloud 50GB
- 279 RUB โ covers one month of iCloud 200GB
- 229 RUB โ covers one month of Apple Music
- 500 or 1000 RUB โ general-purpose top-up, covers a few months of basic subscriptions
- 2000โ5000 RUB โ advance reserve for heavy Apple ecosystem users
Pay via SBP, bank transfer, or USDT. The code arrives by email within a few minutes of payment confirmation.
Step 2. Find the redemption screen on iPhone/iPad
On iPhone or iPad:
- Open the App Store app.
- Tap your profile photo in the top right corner.
- Scroll down to Redeem Gift Card or Code.
- Tap it.
Alternatively, you can go to Settings โ [Your Name] โ Media & Purchases โ Redeem Gift Card or Code.
On Mac:
- Open the App Store app.
- In the left sidebar, scroll to the bottom and click Redeem Gift Card.
Step 3. Enter the code
On the redemption screen, tap You can also enter your code manually (the camera option requires perfect lighting and often fails โ manual entry is more reliable).
Type the 16-character alphanumeric code exactly as shown in your email. The code is case-insensitive, but be careful with characters that look similar: 0 vs O, 1 vs I, 8 vs B.
Tap Redeem.
If the code is valid, Apple shows a confirmation screen: "[Amount] has been added to your Apple Account." The balance is now available immediately.
Step 4. Verify your balance
To confirm the balance was added correctly:
- On iPhone: Settings โ tap your name at the top โ Media & Purchases โ View Account โ scroll to Apple Account Balance
- On Mac: App Store โ click your name at the bottom left โ View Information โ scroll to Apple Account Balance
The balance shows in rubles on a Russian Apple ID.
Step 5. Use the balance
Your Apple ID balance now covers:
iCloud storage โ Settings โ [Your Name] โ iCloud โ Manage Account Storage โ Change Storage Plan. Select a paid tier. Apple will charge the subscription fee from your balance immediately and renew monthly from the same balance.
Apple Music โ Settings โ [Your Name] โ Subscriptions โ Apple Music โ Subscribe. Or search "Apple Music" in the App Store and tap Subscribe. The monthly charge comes from your balance.
App Store purchases โ any app, game, or in-app purchase goes directly from your balance. No separate steps needed โ Apple uses the balance automatically when a card isn't attached.
Apple TV+ โ subscribe through Settings โ [Your Name] โ Subscriptions or directly in the Apple TV app.
Step 6. Set up auto-renewal correctly
Apple auto-renews subscriptions monthly and tries to charge your balance first. As long as your balance covers the renewal amount on the billing date, the subscription continues without interruption.
When your balance runs low, Apple will send an email warning that it cannot renew the subscription. Top up before the renewal date to avoid a lapse. A 500โ1000 RUB reserve above your monthly subscription costs is a reasonable buffer.
If a subscription does lapse because the balance ran out, it doesn't cancel permanently โ topping up and re-subscribing restores access without losing your data.
Common errors and fixes
"This code has already been redeemed" โ the code was used before reaching you. Contact the seller (Marix support) with your order number and a screenshot. A valid replacement will be issued.
"This code is not valid in your region" โ you purchased a card for a different App Store region. Russian Apple IDs only accept Russian-region cards. Contact support for a region exchange.
"Invalid code" โ double-check the characters you typed. Try again slowly. If the same error appears on a correctly entered code, contact support.
Balance added but subscription still shows as expired โ wait 5โ10 minutes and force-refresh. If it persists, go to Settings โ [Your Name] โ Subscriptions, find the expired subscription, and tap Renew. Apple will charge the balance immediately.
Which denomination to buy
For monthly users: buy one or two months' worth at a time. Small denominations cost a higher premium (a 500 RUB card often retails at 700โ800 RUB), but you avoid holding ruble balance that could lose value if exchange rates shift.
For annual budget planning: buy a 2000โ5000 RUB card for a better per-ruble rate and set a calendar reminder to top up when the balance drops below one month's subscription cost.
For first-time top-ups: start with a 500 RUB card to confirm everything works with your Apple ID, then buy larger denominations once you're confident in the process.
