First download from a shared Xbox account — tips and gotchas
After you've signed in to Xbox as the seller and set Home Xbox, the longest part remains — downloading the game. Modern AAA releases are 50–150 GB (Call of Duty Modern Warfare = 220 GB, GTA 6 = 150 GB, Forza Horizon 6 = 95 GB). With shaky internet or wrong console settings, a download can stall for a day.
Before starting the download
Check the internet
- Profile & system → Settings → General → Network settings → Test network speed & statistics.
- Wait for results:
- Download: should be ≥ 50 Mbps for AAA, 100+ Mbps ideally.
- Packet loss: < 5%.
- Latency: < 100 ms.
If speeds are low — switch from Wi-Fi to wired Ethernet. That alone adds 30–50% stability.
Free up space
AAA game + cache + saves = +20% over the listed size. A 100 GB game needs ~120 GB free.
Profile & system → Settings → System → Storage shows used/free.
Enable Energy-saving mode
Lets the console download with the Xbox switched off:
Settings → General → Power options → Energy-saving (instead of «Sleep»).
After that, power-off via the button — the console keeps downloading overnight.
Starting the download
- Sign in as the seller (or as yourself, if Home Xbox is already configured).
- My games & apps → Full library → All owned games.
- Find the game, press Install or Install all.
- If the game is already installed but needs updates — Manage game and add-ons → Updates → Install all.
Xbox starts the download and shows progress in Queue:
My games & apps → Queue → all active downloads.
Common errors and fixes
| Error | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| «You don't own this game or app» | Signed in as yourself before Home Xbox was set | Sign in as seller, then Home Xbox |
| «Unable to start download» | Weak Wi-Fi signal | Switch to Ethernet |
| Download frozen at one percentage | Microsoft network blip | Cancel → Retry, or wait 30 min |
| «Need to be online» on launch | Game didn't pull license | Launch online once, then offline OK |
| Very slow (< 5 Mbps) | Xbox CDN load | Download overnight, faster speeds |
Tip: download in the right order
Many AAA titles (Call of Duty, Forza) split into "base game" + "campaign" + "multiplayer". They queue separately.
To start playing sooner:
- Wait for base game to finish — that's the critical chunk.
- Launch the game — the campaign is usually playable while multiplayer is still downloading.
- Multiplayer becomes available after its part finishes.
If your internet is slow — alternative
Xbox Series X/S can transfer games between consoles directly:
- On another Xbox with the game already downloaded (friend, relative) — My games & apps → Network transfer.
- On your console — Settings → System → Backup & transfer → Network transfer.
- Transfer runs over local network at 500 Mbps+.
In an hour you can pull 150 GB — faster than downloading from the internet.
After the download
- Launch the game online at least once — license activates.
- Switch to your own profile (if not already) — play under yourself on the Home Xbox license.
- Create a fresh save, don't touch the seller's Cloud Save.
Done — the game is yours, progress is yours, the seller's account doesn't matter any more.
