How to remove a seller's Xbox account from your console after playing

Finished the game from a purchased account-share — what now? Leaving the foreign account in place takes up a Profile & system slot, sometimes pings notifications, and the device stays as a "trusted device" inside Microsoft. Better to clean up: unset Home Xbox, remove the seller's account, optionally wipe local saves.

When to remove

• You finished the campaign and won't replay.
• You bought your own copy / key — Home Xbox via seller no longer needed.
• You're buying a new account-share and want the Home Xbox slot free.
• You're selling or handing the console to someone else.

If you might replay — leave Home Xbox in place and the license keeps working.

Step 1. Unset Home Xbox

This is first. Removing the account without unsetting Home Xbox leaves the slot occupied.

1. Sign in on the console as the seller (if you still remember the password from the original package).
2. Xbox button → Profile & system → Settings → General → Personalization → My home Xbox.
3. Press This is not my home Xbox.
4. Confirm.

After this, the "5 swaps a year" slot returns to the seller's account, and your console is no longer the "home" of their library.

Alternative (if you can't sign in): just reassign Home Xbox to another account — say, your personal one. Xbox automatically removes the previous home.

Step 2. Remove the seller's account

1. Profile & system → Add or switch → Manage.
2. Pick the seller's account.
3. Press Remove.
4. Confirm.

Xbox asks whether to also delete saved data for that account on the console:

• Remove account only — keep local saves (in case you want to come back).
• Remove account and all related data — wipe everything, including saves and cache.

If you're sure you're done — pick Remove account and all related data.

Step 3. Optional — wipe local saves

If you kept saves at account removal but changed your mind:

1. My games & apps → See all → find the seller's game.
2. Press Menu (≡) on the controller → Manage game and add-ons.
3. Saved data → select all saves tagged with the seller's name.
4. Delete → confirm.

Step 4. Uninstall the game (optional)

If you need disk space:

1. My games & apps → See all → find the game.
2. Menu (≡) → Uninstall → Uninstall all.

What NOT to do

• Don't sign out of Xbox Live via "factory reset" — you'd lose your own data too.
• Don't try to change the seller's password — Microsoft ToS violation, possible block.
• Don't unlink Xbox Live Gold / Game Pass subs of the seller — they're tied to their account, not the console.

Action summary

1. Unset Home Xbox (point Home back at your own profile).
2. Remove the seller's account (Profile & system → Add or switch → Manage → Remove).
3. Wipe local saves and the game itself if you need the space.
