Short answer: yes, but with real risks. Nintendo actively bans consoles running CFW. We explain how detection works, what protection methods exist and how reliable each one is.
How Nintendo detects custom firmware
Every time the Nintendo Switch connects to the internet it sends unique console identifiers and firmware data to Nintendo's servers. This data reveals:
- Unsigned titles — games without a legitimate eShop ticket
- Modified system files — changes to NAND that differ from stock
- Homebrew signatures — traces of unofficial code being executed
- Mismatched firmware version — a version that does not exist or has been faked
Detection is not instant. Some users have played online without protection for weeks. But a ban always comes in the end — Nintendo runs ban waves.
Protection methods for online play
🔴 No protection — Very high risk Direct connection to Nintendo Network with CFW running. A ban is almost guaranteed.
🟠 90DNS — High risk Blocks DNS queries to Nintendo servers so the Switch cannot "phone home". Does not block all channels — newer firmware can bypass it.
🟡 Incognito — Medium risk Wipes PRODINFO (unique console identifiers). Nintendo cannot identify the console. Once active, you cannot sign into Nintendo Account on that console.
🟢 Dual NAND (EMUNAND) — Low risk A separate CFW partition is fully isolated from the stock firmware. SYSNAND stays clean — online play on it is safe. EMUNAND is used for homebrew and pirated titles, offline only.
How to set up Dual NAND (EMUNAND)
Dual NAND is the most reliable way to combine online play and CFW. The idea: an EMUNAND partition is created on the SD card that is completely isolated from the main storage (SYSNAND).
- Prepare your SD card — Minimum 64 GB. EMUNAND takes 32 GB (the size of Switch internal storage) plus space for games.
- Install Atmosphere and create EMUNAND — Via Hekate (the bootloader): emuMMC → Create emuMMC → SD File. The process takes 10–20 minutes.
- Separate your usage — SYSNAND — online play, official games, Nintendo Account only. EMUNAND — offline only, homebrew and pirated titles.
- Never mix the two — Do not sign into Nintendo Account from EMUNAND. Do not install pirated games on SYSNAND. This is the golden rule.
LAN Play — online without Nintendo's servers
An alternative to official online for CFW users is LAN Play. This homebrew app emulates a local network over the internet.
Many games with local multiplayer (Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Splatoon) can be played via LAN Play with other CFW users — no Nintendo Network required, no ban risk.
Drawbacks: you need to find other CFW users to play with, LAN Play servers can be unstable, and not all games are supported.
What to do if your console is already banned
A Nintendo online ban is permanent. Your options:
- Use offline only — your entire game library still works, and LAN Play multiplayer remains available
- Buy a second console — a clean Switch for online, the modded one for offline
- Set up EMUNAND retrospectively — SYSNAND is banned, but you can still use CFW through EMUNAND
FAQ
Can you play online with a modded Nintendo Switch?
Technically yes, but Nintendo actively detects custom firmware and bans consoles. Without protection measures (90DNS, Incognito or Dual NAND) a modded Switch will typically receive an online ban within a few sessions.
What is a Nintendo online ban?
A Nintendo Network Ban is a permanent block on the console's serial number at the server level. A banned console cannot connect to Nintendo Network, the eShop or online multiplayer. Offline mode and CFW continue to work. The ban is irreversible — Nintendo does not lift them.
How does Dual NAND differ from 90DNS?
Dual NAND physically splits memory into two partitions: the original firmware (SYSNAND) for online play and CFW (EMUNAND) for homebrew and pirated titles. It is the most reliable approach. 90DNS only blocks DNS queries to Nintendo's servers — a weaker method, as newer Switch firmware versions can bypass DNS filtering.
What is Incognito and does it work?
Incognito is a CFW tool that wipes the console's unique identifiers (PRODINFO) before connecting to the internet. Without those identifiers Nintendo cannot link the session to a specific console. It works, but with a caveat: once Incognito is active you cannot sign into your Nintendo Account on that console.
Do you need a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to play online on a modded Switch?
Yes, if you connect through the official SYSNAND. If you use CFW with homebrew local/LAN multiplayer — no subscription is needed. Apps like LAN Play let you play with other CFW users over the internet without Nintendo's servers.
If the console is already banned — can it be reversed?
Nintendo does not reverse bans. Your options are to use the modded Switch in offline-only mode or buy a clean console for online play. Some users purchase "donor" serials, but this is unreliable and can compromise another person's account.
