What Is an Adyen FRAUD Refusal
When you pay on a website or app that uses Adyen as its payment processor, every transaction runs through Adyen's proprietary risk engine called RevenueProtect. If the system considers your transaction suspicious, it returns a Refused status with the refusal reason FRAUD or FRAUD-CANCELLED.
This does not mean you did anything wrong. Risk algorithms produce false positives regularly, especially when the card or device is new, or when the purchase pattern differs from your usual behavior.
Why It Happens
Adyen assigns each transaction a risk score from 0 to 100. If the score exceeds the threshold set by the merchant, the payment is declined automatically. Common causes of a high risk score:
- Country mismatch between card and IP address. Your card is issued in one country but you are connecting through a VPN with a different country's IP.
- New browser or device. The device fingerprint does not match historical data.
- Unusual amount or merchant. A first purchase at a foreign store for a large amount.
- AVS or CVV mismatch. Incorrect billing address or wrong CVV2 code.
- Multiple failed attempts in a row. Retrying the payment repeatedly increases the risk score further.
Fix Steps
Double-check your card details. Make sure the card number, expiry date, CVV, and billing address are entered correctly.
Disable your VPN. A mismatch between the card's country and your IP country is one of the top triggers. Try paying without VPN.
Switch browser or device. Browser extensions, ad blockers, and incognito mode can affect the device fingerprint.
Wait 24 hours before retrying. Multiple attempts in quick succession raise the risk score significantly.
Contact the merchant's support. The merchant can manually whitelist your account or request a review through their Adyen dashboard.
Use a Marix virtual card. Marix cards come with a European billing address and are issued under international card schemes, which reduces false positives from risk engines like Adyen's.
FAQ
Why does Adyen block me if I have funds on my card? Available balance has no effect on risk scoring. Adyen evaluates behavioral and technical signals, not your account balance.
Can I appeal the fraud block directly with Adyen? Adyen only works with merchants, not directly with cardholders. Contact the merchant's support team โ they can escalate the case through their Adyen account.
How many times can I retry the payment? Adyen recommends no more than two attempts within 24 hours. Frequent retries automatically increase the risk score.
If foreign websites regularly decline your payments, try Marix. Virtual cards with a European billing address reduce false declines and let you pay at stores worldwide.
