Could Not Add Cellular Plan โ Airalo eSIM Install Failed
You try to install an Airalo eSIM on your iPhone โ and after a few seconds you see "Could not add Cellular Plan." Install cancels. This error is not a faulty eSIM: it almost always comes from iPhone profile limits, a reused QR, or unstable Wi-Fi during install.
Why this error happens
- iPhone eSIM profile limit reached. iPhone stores up to 8 eSIM profiles at once (you can actively use 2, but up to 8 can sit in the system). Trying to add a ninth triggers the error.
- QR code already used on another device. If the eSIM was installed once on another iPhone or Android, the same QR will not work on a new device.
- Unstable Wi-Fi. During install, iPhone connects to the SM-DP+ server. A dropped connection mid-process rolls back the install with an error.
- Old iOS version. Below iOS 14 eSIM support is limited; on iOS 17+ Apple tightened profile checks.
How to fix it
- Check your eSIM profile list. Settings โ Cellular (or Mobile Service) โ scroll down. Delete unused eSIMs by swiping left, or via Settings โ Cellular โ tap an eSIM โ Remove Cellular Plan.
- Reboot the iPhone fully. Not Restart from settings โ hold the side buttons until the Apple logo appears. This clears stuck eSIM sessions.
- Connect to stable Wi-Fi. Home Wi-Fi is better than hotel Wi-Fi. At least 5 Mbps for a smooth install.
- Install via manual entry. Settings โ Cellular โ Add eSIM โ Use QR Code โ Enter Details Manually. Copy SM-DP+ Address and Activation Code from the Airalo app (My eSIMs โ Install Manually).
- If the QR was used before โ open Airalo chat (My eSIMs โ Help) and request reissue. Airalo often regenerates a free QR for the same package.
- Update iOS. Settings โ General โ Software Update. Install is more reliable on the latest version.
- Wait a minute and retry. Apple sometimes returns the error because of temporary load on its profile servers.
What the error means in different cases
| Scenario | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| First install on new iPhone | Weak Wi-Fi or server load | Reboot and retry |
| Already had 8 eSIMs in system | iPhone profile limit | Remove old eSIMs |
| Same QR on second iPhone | Single-use QR | Request a new one from Airalo |
| After restoring from backup | Broken profiles | Remove all eSIMs, reinstall |
