Airalo eSIM QR Code Not Working — Causes and Fix
You opened the iPhone or Android camera to install your purchased Airalo eSIM, but the phone cannot see the QR code or shows "Could not recognize code." This usually happens right before a trip or already at the airport, when you have no time to troubleshoot. The good news: even if the QR fails, the eSIM can be installed manually in under a minute.
Why the Airalo QR code fails to scan
- Screen glare and dim image. The glossy display of the phone showing the QR reflects light, so the scanning camera cannot isolate the contrast pattern.
- QR already used. Each Airalo QR is single-use. If the eSIM was already installed (even if later deleted), the same QR will not work again.
- Install window expired. Most Airalo packages give 365 days to activate, but past that the QR is no longer valid.
- Blurry or cropped image. A screenshot taken from the edge of the screen, a low-resolution photo, or a small thumbnail prevents the camera from decoding.
How to fix it
- Open the full-size QR on a second device. In the Airalo app go to My eSIMs → select the package → Install eSIM → View QR Code. Display it on a bright screen.
- No second device? Use manual install. On the same screen in the Airalo app tap Install Manually. You will get two fields: SM-DP+ Address and Activation Code.
- On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Use QR Code → Enter Details Manually. Paste the SM-DP+ address into the first field, the Activation Code into the second. Leave Confirmation Code blank.
- On Android: Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → Add eSIM → Need help? → Enter manually. Same two fields.
- Copy values character by character. Use the Copy button in the Airalo app — no leading or trailing spaces. A single stray dot will break the install.
- If the error persists — open Airalo chat support via the app (My eSIMs → Help). They can reissue the package if needed.
When the QR cannot be fixed
