Airalo eSIM Roaming Error — How to Enable Data Roaming
You are abroad: the Airalo eSIM is installed, the carrier name shows in the corner, but there is no internet — messages won't send, maps won't load. This is a classic case where your phone treats Airalo as a "foreign" carrier and blocks it as roaming. One setting fixes it, but most people miss it.
Why this happens
- Data Roaming is off on the Airalo line. Airalo uses partner operators in each country, so to your phone it is always roaming. Without Data Roaming enabled, no data flows.
- Home SIM is active and selected for data. If your home line is chosen as Cellular Data, the phone keeps trying to use it instead of Airalo.
- Roaming toggled off from a previous trip. Many users disable roaming after returning home (to avoid carrier bills) and forget to turn it back on.
- Low data policy enabled. iOS Low Data Mode or Android Data Saver can choke background connections on the Airalo line.
How to fix it
- iPhone: Settings → Cellular → select the Airalo line → toggle Data Roaming on. The switch is on the Airalo line, not the home line.
- iPhone (single SIM): if you only have Airalo with no physical SIM — still go to Settings → Cellular → Airalo → Data Roaming → ON.
- Android: Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → select Airalo → Roaming → enable. On Samsung One UI: Settings → Connections → Mobile networks → Data roaming → select Airalo.
- Make Airalo the primary data line. iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data → Airalo. Android: Settings → SIMs → Mobile data → Airalo.
- Disable the home SIM while traveling. Settings → Cellular → home line → turn off Turn On This Line. This prevents it from competing for data.
- Reboot the phone. After changing roaming settings, iPhone sometimes needs a full restart to apply them.
- Confirm Low Data Mode is off. Settings → Cellular → Airalo → Cellular Data Options → Low Data Mode → OFF.
