Amazon Gift Card 'Claim Code Invalid' — Causes and Fixes
When you redeem an Amazon gift card at amazon.com/gc/redeem you see «The claim code you entered isn't valid» or «We're sorry. The claim code you entered isn't valid. Please check the code and try again». The code arrived by email and looks fresh — yet Amazon refuses it. There are three common causes, and usually it resolves without contacting support.
Why this happens
- Manual-entry typo. An Amazon claim code is 14-16 Latin letters and digits. The trickiest pairs:
0/O,1/I/L,5/S,B/8. On some vouchers they are visually identical. - Storefront mismatch. Amazon is several separate stores: amazon.com (US), amazon.de (Germany), amazon.co.uk (UK), amazon.co.jp (Japan), amazon.in (India). Each has its own currency and its own gift card. A US card cannot be redeemed on amazon.de.
- Code already redeemed. If the voucher was shared in plain text (a chat photo, shared Drive), bots or third parties may have claimed it.
- Card not activated by the seller. Retail vouchers (Walgreens, Walmart) are only activated at the till. If the cashier did not scan it, the code is printed but «dead».
How to fix it
- Open the right storefront. US card → amazon.com/gc/redeem. German card → amazon.de/gc/redeem. UK card → amazon.co.uk/gc/redeem. The country in the URL must match the card.
- Re-type the code by hand. Do not paste — invisible characters (spaces, non-breaking spaces) can creep in. Type on the keyboard, checking 0/O and 1/I.
- Check your Amazon account region. Account → Your Account → Settings → Country/Region Settings. If your account is in one country but the card is in another, sign into the matching storefront — Amazon allows one email to be linked to several storefronts.
- Contact the seller. If manual entry on the right storefront still fails, the card is either redeemed or never activated. A reliable reseller issues a replacement within the hour.
- Contact Amazon Support. amazon.com/gp/help/customer/contact-us → Gift Cards → Issues with Gift Card. Have the code, purchase date / receipt and seller email ready.
