How Anti-Fraud Scoring Works
An anti-fraud system is a set of algorithms that evaluate the risk of every transaction in real time. Services like Stripe Radar, Kount, Sift, and Riskified collect dozens of signals and calculate a final "fraud score." If it exceeds a set threshold, the payment is automatically declined.
Importantly, a decline doesn't mean you're considered a fraudster. It means the combination of circumstances around your transaction looks atypical for that particular merchant.
Common Anti-Fraud Triggers
Technical signals:
- VPN or datacenter IP
- Browser fingerprint with no history
- Multiple consecutive failed attempts
- Headless browser or automated traffic
Card signals:
- New card with no transaction history
- Prepaid BIN
- Billing address doesn't match the card's country
- Unusually large amount for this card
Behavioral signals:
- Form filled out too quickly (bot pattern)
- Multiple card attempts on one order
- Unusual time of day for the merchant
Reputation signals:
- Email from a disposable domain
- IP previously associated with fraud
- Device present in a fraud device database
Fix Steps
Step 1. Wait 10โ30 minutes. Some anti-fraud systems temporarily block an IP after a decline โ a pause resets the counter.
Step 2. Disable VPN and use a clean browser. Remove all additional technical risk signals.
Step 3. Check and correct your billing address. It must exactly match what is registered with your card provider.
Step 4. Make sure the card has sufficient funds. Insufficient balance is itself a risk signal.
Step 5. Use your primary email, not a temporary one. Emails from disposable domains (mailinator.com, guerrillamail.com) raise fraud scores.
Step 6. Try a different device. If your browser fingerprint is already "flagged" after multiple failed attempts, try another computer or phone.
Step 7. Contact merchant support. Explain the situation โ many merchants manually approve transactions after a quick review.
FAQ
Can I find out the exact reason for the decline? Usually no. Merchants and processors don't disclose their exact anti-fraud rules to prevent fraudsters from gaming them. You can only infer the cause from indirect signs.
How many times can I retry a payment? No more than 3 times in a row โ otherwise the anti-fraud system detects a "brute force" pattern and blocks the session for a longer period.
Will using a different card help? Yes, if the first card has accumulated too many declines. But fix the technical issues first (VPN, fingerprint) โ otherwise the new card will also be declined.
Marix cards maintain a clean reputation in anti-fraud systems, which increases your chances of passing on the first attempt.
