'Your Apple ID Balance Cannot Be Used for This Purchase' โ Fix
At checkout Apple says: "Your Apple ID balance cannot be used for this purchase." You have credit, but Apple won't apply it. This is different from "Payment Declined" โ here the balance itself is rejected, not the payment method. The reason is the purchase category.
Why this happens
- Third-party payment gateway inside an app. Some games and services (Genshin Impact, Honor of Kings, separate in-app storefronts) process payments outside Apple's In-App Purchase system. They accept cards only, not Apple balance.
- Family subscription with another organizer. If you're in a Family, subscription billing runs through the organizer's card. Your personal balance is not used โ Apple says "balance cannot be used."
- Subscription with a free trial. During a "free trial," Apple often won't accept balance โ it wants a real card to charge once the trial ends. After the trial, balance can be used.
- Cross-region iTunes Gifting. Sending an app or subscription as a gift historically requires a card, not balance.
- Regional purchase restrictions. Some in-app purchases are limited to the account's region; balance on a non-matching account is simply ignored.
How to fix it
- Identify what exactly you're buying. One-off app or a subscription? Standard Apple IAP or a game's own storefront? The category determines whether balance can be used at all.
- Enable mixed billing. Settings โ [your name] โ Media & Purchases โ View Account โ Manage Payments โ Add Payment Method. Attach a valid card. Apple deducts from balance first, then bills the remainder to the card โ but the card must be on file.
- Check Family Sharing. Settings โ [your name] โ Family Sharing โ Purchase Sharing. If you're not the organizer, either disable Purchase Sharing for this purchase or have the organizer pay.
- Use Apple Pay for non-standard purchases. Some apps offer a separate "Pay with Apple Pay" button โ it binds to your card, not balance, and bypasses the restriction.
- Contact Apple Support.
getsupport.apple.comโ Apps & Subscriptions โ Payment & Refunds. If your balance is "stuck" (visible but un-spendable in any way), Apple either reverses it or explains the block.
