How to Dispute an 'Already Used' iTunes Gift Card with Apple Support
You bought a physical or digital iTunes gift card, entered the code, and App Store replied: "This code has been redeemed." You never shared it, photographed it, or entered it twice. Someone redeemed it before you, either accidentally or fraudulently. Apple Support does resolve cases like this โ but only if you bring the right evidence.
Why this happens
- Card pre-activated before sale. Scammers in retail stores open packaging, photograph the PIN, reseal, and return the card to the shelf. The buyer pays for an already-spent code.
- Code exposure. A code shown in a chat, screenshot, or unencrypted email can be scraped and redeemed by bots within seconds.
- Purchase from unverified seller. Anonymous marketplaces and grey-market Telegram channels often resell the same code to multiple buyers.
- Apple glitch (rare). Occasionally the system marks a fresh code as redeemed. Usually clears after 30โ60 minutes.
What to collect first
- The physical card or the original digital receipt. Photo of the back of the card (serial number, barcode, PIN). For digital cards, the original delivery email with the code.
- Proof of purchase. Store receipt (Walmart, Target, etc.), bank statement screenshot, or order email from an online reseller. Date, amount, and last 4 digits of the paying card should be visible.
- Screenshot of the error. The exact App Store message "This code has been redeemed" with date and Apple ID visible.
- The Apple ID you tried to redeem on. Email and account region.
How to open the Apple Support case
- Open
getsupport.apple.com. Sign in with the Apple ID you tried to redeem on. - Pick the path: Apps & Subscriptions โ Gift Cards & App Store Credit โ iTunes Gift Card Codes โ The code has already been used.
- Choose Chat or Call. Chat is usually faster โ the agent sends you an upload link for the card photo and receipt right in the chat window.
- Describe it briefly. Example: "Bought gift card on [date] from [retailer]. Tried to redeem on [Apple ID] today, error says code already used. I never shared this code."
- Upload everything. Photo of card back, photo of receipt, screenshot of error. Apple reviews in real time.
- Apple traces which account redeemed the code. If it was fraudulent, Apple credits the funds back to your Apple ID balance within 24โ72 hours, or in rare cases refunds to the original card.
What NOT to do
| Action | Why it hurts you |
|---|---|
| Chargeback at the bank before talking to Apple | Apple can disable your Apple ID for disputing |
| Call Apple without a receipt | Support can't open a case without proof of purchase |
| Re-enter the code many times | Apple won't unlock it; your Apple ID gets flagged |
| Buy from the same seller again | If they're fraudulent, it repeats |
| Delete the original email or toss the receipt | Without docs, recovery is nearly impossible |
