Apple Gift Card Says 'Invalid or Inactive' — How to Fix
You try to redeem an iTunes gift card and Apple replies: "This code is invalid or inactive." You just bought it, the print looks fine — yet the App Store refuses to credit your balance. This is one of the most common redemption errors, and most of the time it has a fix.
Why this error happens
- The card was never activated at the register. Retailers (Walmart, Target, drugstores) only activate gift cards when the cashier scans them at checkout. If the activation step was skipped, the code is technically "dead" even though it's printed.
- Typo during entry. A 16-character iTunes code makes it easy to confuse
1withI,0withO,Bwith8. Apple returns the same generic "invalid" error in that case. - Storefront mismatch. A US-denominated card will not redeem on a Turkish, Indian, or Russian Apple ID. Apple says "invalid" without telling you the real reason is region.
- The code was already redeemed. If the PIN was exposed (photo in a chat, leaked email, screenshot online), bots scrape and burn codes within seconds.
How to fix it
- Re-enter the code character by character. Open App Store on iPhone → tap your profile icon top-right → Redeem Gift Card or Code → Enter Code Manually. Verify every character, especially
1/I,0/O,S/5,B/8. - Try the camera scanner. The same screen has a Use Camera option — this eliminates typos completely.
- Confirm your Apple ID region. Settings → [your name] → Media & Purchases → View Account → Country/Region. The region must match the gift card's storefront (US card = US Apple ID).
- Go back to the seller. If the code is still rejected, the card is either un-activated or already used. A legitimate reseller will issue a replacement within hours; a retailer needs the physical card and receipt.
- Contact Apple Support. Open
getsupport.apple.com→ iTunes & App Store → Redemption Codes. Have a photo of the back of the card (with serial number) and your receipt ready.
