US iTunes Gift Card Won't Work Outside the US — How to Fix
You bought a US iTunes gift card to spend on the US App Store, but Apple rejects it on your Apple ID — "wrong region" or simply "invalid." The reason is almost always the same: a US iTunes gift card is locked to the US storefront, and without a proper US Apple ID it will not activate.
Why a US card needs a US Apple ID
- The card's storefront is US. Apple permanently anchors every gift card to the country it was issued in. A US card only redeems on a US storefront — no VPN, no proxy, no device-level country switch bypasses this.
- A US billing address is required. Switching Apple ID to US requires a valid American address: state, city, and a 5-digit ZIP that match each other. "New York, NY, 10001" works; mismatched combinations (NY with a Californian ZIP) get rejected.
- You can't switch region with active subscriptions. Apple Music, iCloud+, Apple TV+ on your current account will block storefront switches. Cancel them first and burn the balance to zero.
- Apple's fraud system watches behavior. Rapid region switching on the same Apple ID increases the chance of a block. Make the change once and intentionally.
How to fix it
- Create a fresh Apple ID for the US App Store. Go to
appleid.apple.com→ Create Your Apple ID. Set Country/Region = United States. Use a brand-new email (Gmail or iCloud) not tied to any other Apple ID. - Enter a US billing address. When you set up or first sign in via App Store, Apple asks for the address. Acceptable options are real public addresses (hotels, malls, public buildings). What matters is that state + city + ZIP form a real combination. Payment method = None.
- Sign in on iPhone via Settings → Media & Purchases. Do not change the Apple ID for iCloud — only for App Store. Settings → [your name] → Media & Purchases → Sign Out, then sign in with the new US account.
- Redeem the US card. App Store → profile → Redeem Gift Card or Code → enter the code or scan it. The balance lands on the US account in USD.
- Buy apps and subscriptions on the US App Store. On your first purchase Apple may request verification (email or 2FA) — that's expected for a new account.
