Apple Payment Declined Even With Balance โ How to Fix
You topped up your Apple ID with an iTunes gift card, App Store shows $25 or โบ250 in credit, but when you try to subscribe or buy something Apple says: "Your payment method was declined." There's money on the balance, yet the purchase fails. This isn't a bug โ it's how Apple ID balance interacts with subscriptions.
Why this happens
- Subscriptions require both balance and a valid card. Apple Music, iCloud+, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, and third-party subscriptions (Netflix via App Store, Spotify) all need a payment method on file, even when your balance fully covers the charge. This is Apple's anti-fraud "card on file" policy for recurring billing.
- The card on the account is expired or invalid. If your stored card has expired or been blocked by the bank, Apple denies subscriptions even though the balance is fine.
- No card is attached at all. With payment method set to None, you can still buy one-off apps and movies from the balance, but subscriptions won't activate โ the button is greyed out or returns an error.
- The price exceeds the balance. If you have $5 and try to subscribe to a $9.99 plan, Apple expects to bill the difference to your card. Without a valid card the entire charge fails.
How to fix it
- Check your current payment method. Settings โ [your name] โ Media & Purchases โ View Account โ Manage Payments. See what's set โ card, balance, or None.
- Add a valid card (if you need subscriptions). Manage Payments โ Add Payment Method โ enter card details with CVV and billing address. The card's country must match your Apple ID region โ a US ID needs a US card (or a virtual US card from Privacy.com etc.).
- For one-time purchases, set the method to None. No card and no subscription? Buy apps directly from the balance, but only if Manage Payments shows None, not an expired card. Remove old cards.
- Use Family Sharing. If your family organizer has a valid card, family members can subscribe via the organizer's card plus their own balance. Settings โ [your name] โ Family Sharing โ Purchase Sharing.
- Contact Apple Support for stuck subscriptions.
