What is AVS?
AVS (Address Verification System) is a fraud-prevention tool used primarily in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. During a transaction, the merchant sends the billing address and/or postal code to the card network, and the issuing bank compares them against the address registered on the account.
If the details don't match, the bank returns an AVS response with a mismatch code. The merchant then decides whether to accept the payment, ask the customer to re-enter their address, or decline the transaction.
Why does an AVS mismatch occur?
- Wrong address entered. The most common cause โ a typo or an address that doesn't match what the bank has on file.
- Address changed but not updated with the bank. You moved but didn't inform your bank โ the old address is still stored in the system.
- Foreign card. Banks outside the US and UK often don't support AVS at all. The bank returns "unavailable," which some merchants treat as a mismatch.
- Address format differences. Address formatting conventions vary by country. "Flat 3, 14 Baker Street" and "14 Baker Street, Flat 3" are technically different strings.
- Wrong postal code. Even a correct street address with an incorrect zip or postcode will trigger a mismatch.
How to fix an AVS mismatch
- Confirm your address with your bank. Check your banking app or call your bank's hotline to see the exact billing address on file.
- Enter the address exactly as your bank has it. Match abbreviations (St., Ave., Blvd.), line order, and formatting precisely.
- Try the postal code only. Many sites only verify the zip/postal code. Enter it exactly as registered with your bank.
- For foreign cards. If your bank doesn't support AVS, try leaving the address field blank or entering "NA." Some merchants accept transactions where AVS returns "unavailable."
- Contact the merchant's support. Explain that your card is from a country where AVS is not supported. Some merchants can process the order manually.
- Use a Marix card. Marix virtual cards come with a defined billing address โ you always know exactly what to enter.
FAQ
Is AVS required for all payments? No. AVS is primarily used in the US, UK, and Canada. Most European, Asian, and other international banks don't support it. Whether to accept or decline a payment when AVS returns "unavailable" is left to each individual merchant.
If AVS mismatches, will I still be charged? It depends on the merchant's configuration. Some merchants accept payments with partial AVS matches (for example, postal code matches but street doesn't). Others decline any mismatch.
What address should I enter for a Marix card? Marix provides a specific billing address for each card inside your account dashboard. Always use that address when prompted.
Struggling with AVS checks when paying for international services? Marix virtual cards come with a ready-to-use billing address โ no guessing, no formatting confusion.
