Claude Pro Payment Failed — Anthropic Restricts Countries
When you try to subscribe to Claude Pro ($20/month) on claude.ai Anthropic returns «Your payment was unsuccessful. Please try a different payment method» or «We're unable to process this payment in your region». This is not a temporary outage or a bank issue — Anthropic only works with a specific list of countries and blocks everyone else. Retrying with the same card is pointless and may lock the account.
Why this happens
- Anthropic is a US company with a narrow geography. The supported-country list is much smaller than OpenAI's: US, Canada, UK, EU, Australia, Japan and a handful of Asian markets. Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Armenia and many others are not on it.
- BIN check on the card. Stripe inspects the first 6 digits. A card with a BIN from an unsupported country is declined before the bank is contacted.
- IP check. A mismatch between IP country and card country raises the risk score. Anthropic may decline even a card that is formally from a supported region.
- Address check. The payment form requests a billing address. Stripe AVS cross-references it with the address on file at the bank.
How to fix it
- Check the supported-country list. Open anthropic.com/supported-countries. If your country is not there, retrying the same card is pointless.
- Use a virtual card from a supported country. Virtual cards with US, Canadian or EU BIN work. Russian-issued «virtual» cards with RU BINs do not.
- Match IP to card country. When paying, run a VPN with an IP from the same country as the card BIN. Anthropic catches mismatches.
- Enter a matching billing address. Use a real address in the chosen country. Stripe runs AVS on most transactions.
- If the first payment works but renewals fail. Anthropic may have lowered the risk score after the first success but raised it after an IP change. Use a stable VPN until the next billing cycle.
