What Is the Claude / Anthropic Payment Error
When you try to subscribe to Claude Pro or add credits to the Anthropic API (via console.anthropic.com), you receive a payment error: the card is declined, the payment fails, or the payment method is not supported.
Anthropic, like OpenAI, uses Stripe as its payment processor. This means the card acceptance rules are largely similar โ with the same restrictions on card types and regional availability.
Why It Happens
Card from an unsupported region. Anthropic applies regional restrictions similar to OpenAI. Cards issued in Russia, Belarus, Iran, and other US-sanctioned countries are not accepted.
Prepaid card. Anthropic does not accept prepaid cards. Stripe blocks prepaid instruments at the merchant level for recurring subscriptions.
Billing address mismatch. The AVS (Address Verification System) check blocks transactions when the entered address doesn't match the bank's records.
Bank blocking international payment. Some banks require special authorization for international online transactions.
Fraud suspicion restrictions. A new account, a VPN, or data inconsistencies can trigger the anti-fraud system.
Card transaction limit. When adding a large amount of API credits, your card's transaction limit may be insufficient.
Supported Payment Methods
Anthropic accepts:
- Visa and Mastercard debit cards from supported countries
- Visa, Mastercard, and American Express credit cards
- For API โ invoice payment is possible for organizations with high usage volumes
Not accepted: PayPal, cryptocurrency, prepaid cards, bank transfers (for most customers).
Step-by-Step Fix
Step 1. Check the card's country of issue. Make sure your card is issued in a country supported by Anthropic. The list of supported countries is available on the Anthropic website.
Step 2. Confirm the card is not prepaid. Check the card type in your banking app or on your bank's website.
Step 3. Verify the billing address. When adding the card at console.anthropic.com, enter the address exactly as it is registered with your bank.
Step 4. Disable your VPN. Try adding the card and paying without a VPN or proxy.
Step 5. Enable international payments at your bank. Contact your bank and confirm that international online payments are enabled for your card.
Step 6. Try a different card. If your card is from a restricted region, use a card from a supported country. Marix virtual cards are accepted by Anthropic.
Step 7. Contact Anthropic support. If the problem persists, reach out via support.anthropic.com or email [email protected].
FAQ
Are Claude.ai and the Anthropic API on the same billing system? No, they are separate billing systems. The Claude Pro subscription (claude.ai) and API credits (console.anthropic.com) are processed independently. An error in one doesn't necessarily mean a problem with the other.
My card works on OpenAI but not on Anthropic. Why? Stripe applies merchant rules individually. Anthropic may have a slightly different set of restrictions than OpenAI. The most common cause is the card's country of issue.
Is there a free API tier for testing? Yes, Anthropic provides a small starter credit to new accounts. If you're just starting, make sure the credit hasn't been used up before adding a card.
Need a card for Claude Pro or the Anthropic API? Marix provides virtual debit cards that are accepted by Anthropic without issues.
