What is CVV and why is it checked?
CVV (Card Verification Value) is the 3-digit (or 4-digit for AmEx) security code printed on the back of your card. It is not stored on the magnetic stripe and isn't transmitted in most card-present transactions, which makes it an additional proof that you physically possess the card.
A CVV mismatch error means the code you entered does not match what the issuing bank has on record.
Why does a CVV mismatch occur?
- Typo when entering. A three-digit code is easy to mistype, especially on a mobile keyboard.
- Worn card. The digits on the back of the card have faded and are hard to read correctly.
- Card reissued. When a bank reissues a card, it generates a new CVV. If you entered the code from your old card, it won't match.
- Virtual card reissued. Some virtual cards generate a new CVV on reissue โ make sure you're using the current code from your dashboard, not one you memorized earlier.
- Browser autofill populated old data. Your browser saved card details from a previous card and is pre-filling them now.
- Mixed up cards. You're entering the CVV from one card while the card number belongs to a different card.
How to fix a CVV mismatch
- Read the code carefully from your card. For Visa/Mastercard, the 3-digit CVV is printed after the last 4 digits of the card number on the back.
- Clear browser autofill. Delete saved card data in your browser and re-enter everything manually.
- For virtual cards. Log into your dashboard and copy the current CVV from there โ don't rely on memory.
- Make sure the card number and CVV belong to the same card. If you have multiple cards, double-check that you're not mixing up credentials.
- Try a different browser. Sometimes cached data in a specific browser causes the issue.
- Call your bank. If you're confident the CVV is correct but the payment still fails, there may be an issue on the bank's side. A representative can check the internal decline reason.
FAQ
How many CVV entry attempts do I get? Typically three attempts. After that, the card may be temporarily blocked. Wait a few hours or call your bank to unblock it.
Can I get my CVV from the bank if it has worn off? No โ banks don't store CVV in plain text. You'll need to request a card reissue. For virtual cards, the CVV is always visible in your account dashboard.
What if I entered the correct CVV but the payment still failed? The real cause is likely something else โ check your balance, limits, and card status. Call your bank to find out the actual internal decline code.
