What Is Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC)
Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) is a service where a foreign merchant or payment terminal converts the purchase amount into your card's home currency at the point of sale, using their own exchange rate. Instead of paying in the merchant's local currency, you see the amount already converted to your currency โ dollars, euros, pounds, etc.
This sounds convenient, but in practice the DCC rate is almost always less favorable than the rate offered by the card network (Visa/Mastercard) or your bank. The merchant and their bank profit from the spread.
Why DCC Fails at Checkout
"Dynamic Currency Conversion Failed" or a similar message appears in these situations:
- Terminal or gateway technical fault. The merchant's equipment could not reach the DCC provider to obtain a conversion rate.
- DCC provider unavailable. The service supplying the DCC rate is temporarily down.
- Bank rejected the DCC transaction. Some banks are configured to automatically decline DCC transactions, preferring to convert at their own rate.
- Card incompatibility. Not all cards support DCC with a specific merchant or in a specific country.
- Connection timeout. During online checkout, the DCC request may simply not complete within the allowed time window.
Step-by-Step: What to Do When DCC Fails
Step 1. Choose to pay in the local currency.
When DCC fails or is offered, always select payment in the merchant's local currency (not your card's currency). This is called "opting out of DCC." The conversion will then be handled by Visa or Mastercard at a more favorable rate.
Step 2. Ask the cashier to restart the transaction.
At a physical terminal, ask the cashier to rerun the transaction and manually select the merchant's currency.
Step 3. Refresh the page during online checkout.
Reload the payment page and go through checkout again. The DCC offer may not reappear โ or it may load correctly on the second attempt.
Step 4. Contact the merchant.
If the DCC error is preventing checkout completion, reach out to the store's support team. DCC glitches are a merchant-side issue.
Step 5. Check with your bank.
If your bank automatically blocks DCC transactions, verify the settings and whether they can be adjusted.
How to Opt Out of DCC and Why It Saves Money
When prompted "Would you like to pay in [your card currency] or [local currency]?" โ always choose local currency. That is opting out of DCC.
When you opt out of DCC:
- Visa or Mastercard handle the conversion at the interbank rate.
- Your bank may charge a small foreign transaction fee, but it is typically lower than a DCC markup.
- The final amount is usually 2โ5% cheaper.
FAQ
Can I permanently disable DCC on my card?
Some banks allow you to disable DCC at the card level through their mobile app or by calling support. Check with your bank.
Does DCC only apply when traveling abroad?
DCC occurs whenever you pay in a foreign currency โ including online purchases on international sites, even without traveling. If your card currency differs from the merchant's currency, DCC may be offered.
If DCC failed, was my card charged?
No. If the DCC process errored and the transaction did not complete, no charge was made. Any temporary hold will clear within a few days.
When shopping internationally, always opt out of DCC and pay in the local currency โ you will pay less. For purchases in foreign game stores, regional gift cards are even simpler.
