What is happening
You launch Fortnite through Epic Games Launcher, but the game freezes on the loading screen: the progress bar stops, the Epic logo spins endlessly, or the screen goes black. The game does not respond and you cannot reach the lobby.
This issue appears on PC and consoles alike โ typically after updates โ and usually traces back to a handful of common causes.
Root causes
Corrupted Epic Launcher cache. The cache can accumulate damaged data after updates or unexpected shutdowns. The launcher gets stuck trying to read that data.
Incomplete or broken Fortnite update. If an update was interrupted โ due to internet loss, a forced shutdown, or a disk error โ game files may be corrupted.
Antivirus conflict. Some antivirus programs (especially Windows Defender's real-time protection) block Fortnite or Epic Launcher executables, mistaking them for a threat.
Outdated graphics drivers. After major Fortnite updates, the game may require newer GPU drivers. An old driver causes a freeze during graphics initialization.
Insufficient disk space. If your drive has less than 5โ10 GB free, the launcher cannot unpack temporary update files.
Step-by-step fix
Force-quit and restart. Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and end all
EpicGamesLauncher.exeandFortniteClient-Win64-Shipping.exeprocesses. Relaunch the Epic Launcher.Clear the Epic Launcher cache. Close the launcher completely. Navigate to
%localappdata%\EpicGamesLauncher\Savedand delete thewebcacheandwebcache_4147folders. Restart the launcher.Verify game files. In the Epic Launcher, click the three dots next to Fortnite โ "Manage" โ "Verify." The launcher will detect and re-download any corrupted files.
Update or configure your antivirus. Add the Fortnite installation folder (typically
C:\Program Files\Epic Games\Fortnite) to your antivirus exclusions. Or temporarily disable real-time protection to test if it is the culprit.Update GPU drivers. Visit the NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel website and download the latest driver for your graphics card.
Reinstall Fortnite. If nothing else works: uninstall Fortnite through the Epic Launcher (the launcher itself stays installed), then reinstall the game. This takes time but resolves most corrupted-file issues.
Frequently asked questions
Will reinstalling delete my skins and progress? No. All cosmetics and progression are tied to your Epic account and stored on Epic's servers, not locally.
Why did this happen after an update? Major patches can conflict with cached data or old game files. Verifying file integrity usually resolves this without a full reinstall.
Does running as administrator help? Sometimes. Right-click the Epic Launcher shortcut โ "Run as administrator" and see if the game loads normally.
