What is a matchmaking error
A matchmaking error in Fortnite means the game cannot connect you to a server match. You will see an endless queue, a "Matchmaking error" message, or an error code like "mms-" (mms-00000001, mms-playersperteam, etc.). In some cases the game starts finding a match but disconnects you during the loading screen.
Root causes
Epic Games server issues. The most common cause during peak load periods: new season launches, major in-game events (concerts, collaborations), and holidays. Servers become overwhelmed.
Wrong region selected. If your settings point to a region with minimal ping that is temporarily overloaded, the match search will stall. Switching the region often solves the problem instantly.
Strict or moderate NAT type. NAT (Network Address Translation) determines how freely your router allows connections to game servers. Strict NAT (Type 3) blocks some connections and interferes with matchmaking.
VPN interference. A VPN changes your traffic routing and can slow or block connections to matchmaking servers. Epic may also flag a VPN IP as a violation.
Outdated client or pending update. If an update was released but the launcher hasn't finished installing it, the server rejects connections from the outdated client version.
Step-by-step fix
Check server status. Go to status.epicgames.com for active incidents. Also check Epic Games on Twitter/X โ major outages are typically posted there.
Change the matchmaking region. In Fortnite: Settings โ Game โ Matchmaking Region. Manually select a different region or switch to "Auto."
Restart your router and check NAT type. Power off your router for 60 seconds, then turn it back on. Check your NAT type: console network settings or router admin panel. The goal is Open (Type 1) or Moderate (Type 2). If Strict โ enable UPnP in your router settings or manually forward Epic's ports (5222, 5795โ5847, 3478, 3479).
Disable your VPN. Completely disconnect your VPN and any system-level proxies. Restart the game.
Update the game client. Open Epic Launcher and confirm Fortnite is on the latest version. Run any pending update before launching.
Reset network settings. On Windows: Start โ Settings โ Network & Internet โ Network Reset. Reboot and retest the connection.
Frequently asked questions
Is matchmaking down for everyone or just me? Check Reddit (r/FortNiteBR) and the Epic server status page. If there are widespread complaints, it is a server-side issue โ wait for Epic to fix it.
How do I check and change my NAT type? NAT type is shown in the network settings on PS5 and Xbox, or in your router's admin panel on PC. To improve it, enable UPnP in the router settings or manually forward Epic's ports.
Does changing DNS help? Sometimes. Try Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) or Cloudflare (1.1.1.1). This can speed up resolution of Epic server hostnames.
While matchmaking sorts itself out, top up your V-Bucks so you're ready to drop when servers come back. On Marix it takes under a minute. Buy V-Bucks on Marix.
