What Happens When a Bank Suspects Fraud
Banks have the right to temporarily block a transaction or place a hold on funds when their automated system detects suspicious activity. This is called a "fraud hold" or "suspicious activity hold." You may see the money as "pending" or "on hold" โ it has been deducted from your balance but not yet transferred to the merchant.
The bank doesn't know it was you who made the transaction. Its job is to protect you from unauthorized charges. To lift the block, you need to confirm the operation is legitimate.
Why the Bank Suspects Fraud on Your Payment
Transaction out of character. You usually spend $50 but suddenly charged $500 at a foreign merchant.
Foreign merchant. Especially if the transaction's IP address doesn't match your usual location.
Multiple attempts. Several failed authorizations before a successful one โ the standard card testing pattern.
Unusual time. Transaction at 3 AM in your time zone.
Recent device or location change. You recently logged into your banking app from a new device.
Fix Steps
Step 1. Call your bank immediately. Use the number on the back of your card or from the official app โ not from a Google search. Explain that you made the transaction.
Step 2. Have the transaction details ready. Keep at hand: the date and time, the amount, the merchant name, and the last 4 digits of the card.
Step 3. Verify your identity. The bank will ask security questions or request a passphrase. Complete the verification.
Step 4. Explicitly confirm the transaction. Tell the agent: "I confirm that this transaction was made by me and is legitimate." Ask them to remove the "suspicious" flag.
Step 5. Ask about the release timeline. Find out when funds will be released โ typically 1โ3 business days.
Step 6. Enable notifications and register trusted devices. After the hold is lifted, ask the bank to register your device as trusted โ this reduces the chances of this happening again.
FAQ
What happens if I don't respond to the bank's fraud suspicion? The hold automatically lifts after 1โ7 days, but the funds may return to your account instead of being sent to the merchant. This means the payment did not go through.
Can I confirm the transaction through the app instead of calling? Often yes. Many banks allow you to confirm a suspicious transaction via push notification or the "Security" section in their mobile app.
Does this affect my credit history? No. A fraud hold is a temporary security measure โ it has no impact on your credit score and is not recorded in your credit history.
Marix cards are purpose-built for international payments โ your primary bank never sees these transactions and won't block them unexpectedly.
