What is this error
When you pay with Google Pay โ via NFC in a store, in an app, or on a website โ the system never transmits your real card number. Instead it uses a token (called a Device Account Number or DAN), a virtual identifier that is generated and encrypted specifically for each transaction.
"Token Rejected" means the merchant or their acquiring bank received the token but could not authorise it. Your physical card is not necessarily blocked.
Why it happens
- Merchant does not support Google Pay. Not all acquiring banks are configured to process tokenised payments. A terminal may accept NFC but not be able to handle Google Pay tokens specifically.
- Expired or invalid token. Tokens have a lifespan and can become stale, especially if the device has been offline for an extended period.
- Card removed from Google Pay but token still active. A rare scenario where a token exists but is no longer linked to a valid card.
- 3D Secure failure during online payment. Some websites require additional verification that does not complete correctly through the Google Pay flow.
- Bank synchronisation error. The issuing bank and Google have not synchronised the token status โ for example, after a card was reissued.
- Device not unlocked or configured. Google Pay requires the device to be unlocked and biometric authentication to be set up for NFC payments.
Step-by-step fix
- Confirm the merchant supports Google Pay. Look for the Google Pay or contactless payment symbol on the terminal. If it is absent, the terminal may not support tokenised payments.
- Remove the card from Google Pay and add it again. Open Google Pay โ tap the card โ Remove โ re-add the card. This creates a fresh token.
- Update Google Pay to the latest version. An outdated app version may generate malformed tokens.
- Check synchronisation with your bank. If the card was reissued or its details changed, remove the old card from Google Pay and add the new one.
- Confirm NFC is active. Android Settings โ Connected devices โ NFC โ toggle it on if it is off.
- For online payments, try entering card details manually. If Google Pay does not work on a specific website, use direct card number entry as a fallback.
- Contact your bank. Ask them to check the token status for Google Pay and refresh it if necessary.
FAQ
If the token is rejected, does that mean my card is blocked? No. The token is a separate virtual identifier. A token rejection does not affect your physical card โ you can continue using it for other payments.
Why did the token work yesterday but not today? Tokens can expire or be invalidated when card details change, when the bank updates its systems, or when the device has been offline for a long time. The fix is to remove the card and add it again.
Does Google Pay work in Russia and other restricted countries? As of 2022, Google Pay is unavailable for Russian-issued cards. Using a foreign-issued card through Google Pay is possible if the card is supported and the device is properly configured.
If you need a card that works reliably with Google Pay without token issues, Marix virtual cards are compatible with Google Pay and Google Play.
