Midjourney Subscription Payment Error — Stripe Blocks Regional Cards
When subscribing to Midjourney on midjourney.com/account you may see «Your card was declined» or «We were unable to authenticate your card». The card is fine and the limit is fine — but the payment never goes through. The culprit is rarely Midjourney itself; it is Stripe, its payment processor, which blocks cards from a whole list of countries at the policy level.
Why this happens
- Midjourney runs on Stripe. Stripe is one of the strictest processors. Cards from Russia, Belarus, Iran, North Korea, Cuba, Syria and Crimea are auto-declined based on BIN.
- Stripe Radar antifraud. Radar runs ML over 100+ signals: IP, BIN, country, card history, user behaviour. Mismatches push the decline probability sharply up.
- IP vs card mismatch. US card, Russian IP: Radar treats it as a stolen-card pattern. RU card, US IP: blocked under sanctions.
- 3-D Secure does not help. A common misconception — Stripe BIN-level restrictions run before 3-D Secure is even attempted.
How to fix it
- Open the subscription via midjourney.com/account. Remove the old card under Manage Subscription before adding a new one — otherwise Stripe tries both and locks faster.
- Virtual card with a US BIN. Any «virtual» card from a Russian bank still has a RU BIN and fails at the gate. You need a service that issues cards with a real US or EU BIN.
- VPN with the same country IP as the BIN. Stripe Radar evaluates the IP+BIN pair. A clean match almost guarantees a pass.
- Matching billing address. Stripe runs AVS — use a real address in the card country or a mail-forwarding service address.
- If the first payment works but renewals fail. Lock your VPN to the same country. Stripe flags accounts as «unstable» on every IP change.
Method comparison
| Method | Success rate | Effort |
|---|---|---|
| RU card (any) | 0% | — |
| Virtual card from a RU bank | 0% | — |
| US/EU virtual card + matching VPN | 70-90% | High |
| Ready Midjourney account | 100% | Low |
| Turkish / UAE card | 40-60% | Medium |
