What is Minecraft account migration
Until 2021, Minecraft Java Edition used Mojang's own account system. After Microsoft acquired Mojang in 2014, it conducted a mandatory migration of all accounts to Microsoft Accounts. The official migration deadline has passed, but some players still encounter issues โ either because they did not migrate in time or because something went wrong during the process.
Common causes of migration errors
Expired migration token. Mojang issued each account a unique migration link. If you did not use it in time, the link may have expired.
Email conflict. If the email address linked to your Mojang account is already associated with a different Microsoft Account, a conflict arises that blocks migration.
Minecraft already on the target Microsoft Account. If the Microsoft account you are migrating to already has Minecraft, the system cannot add a second licence through migration.
Server-side technical issue. Migration servers occasionally experience high load, especially during mass reminder campaigns.
Suspended Mojang account. If the Mojang account was previously suspended, migration will also be unavailable.
Step-by-step fix
Try migrating again. Go to minecraft.net and sign in with your Mojang username and password. If the account is still active, you should see a migration prompt.
Check your email. Make sure the email linked to your Mojang account is accessible โ a confirmation email will be sent there. Check your spam folder.
Create a new Microsoft Account. If your email is already tied to another Microsoft Account, use a different email address to create a new Microsoft Account and migrate Minecraft to it.
Contact Minecraft support. Go to help.minecraft.net and open a ticket with the subject "Account Migration Issue." Include your Mojang username, email, last login date, and a description of the error.
Provide proof of ownership. Support may ask you to verify that the account is yours โ an old purchase receipt, a PayPal transaction, or access to the original email will help.
Wait for a response. Response times can be up to 7 business days. Note any urgency in your ticket.
What to do if the deadline passed and the account was deactivated
If your Mojang account was deactivated after the migration deadline and you have lost access, there is no way to restore it without contacting support. Microsoft has committed to helping players in these situations through official support channels, but resolution is not guaranteed.
The alternative: purchase a new Minecraft Java/Bedrock key and start fresh.

Do I need to buy Minecraft again after migrating? No. Your licence transfers from the Mojang account to the Microsoft Account.
Can I migrate without access to my old email? It is difficult but possible through support, provided you can prove ownership of the account.
If recovering an old account is taking too long, purchasing a new Minecraft key is the fastest path forward. Marix offers keys with instant delivery and an activation guarantee.
