What "household" means on Netflix
In 2023โ2024, Netflix introduced its household sharing policy. Under it, all devices actively using an account must regularly connect from the same IP address โ the "home" IP.
Netflix defines a household by the IP address of the internet connection. All devices on the same home Wi-Fi network count as part of the same household. If a device goes too long without connecting to the home network, Netflix requests verification.
Why the error appears
- IP address change. You're on a business trip, traveling, or have moved โ the device connects from a different IP.
- Mobile data use. A smartphone on cellular data uses the carrier's IP, which differs from your home IP.
- VPN or proxy. Any VPN changes the IP address, which immediately triggers the household error.
- New device. The first connection of a new TV, tablet, or laptop to the account requires verification.
- Extended absence. If a device hasn't connected to the home network for more than 31 days, Netflix will again request household confirmation.
Step-by-step fix
- Complete verification via your TV. The most reliable way to confirm your household is to launch Netflix on a Smart TV connected to your home network and follow the confirmation steps in the app.
- Use the Temporary Access feature. When trying to open Netflix on an "outside" device, the service will offer to send a one-time code to your email or phone. The code is valid for 24 hours.
- Update your list of home devices. Go to netflix.com โ Account โ Manage Access and Devices. Here you can remove old devices and register new ones.
- Consider Extra Member for frequent travelers. Netflix lets you add one additional member outside the household for a separate fee (around $3โ5 per month depending on region). This is the official way to use the account from a different location.
- Don't use a VPN. A VPN confuses the household detection system and doesn't solve the problem โ it makes it worse.
Frequently asked questions
Can I watch Netflix in a hotel or rented apartment? Yes, if you're the account owner or added as an Extra Member. In this case, Netflix issues a temporary code to verify the device. Playback is available after entering the code.
What happens if I don't complete verification? The device won't get access to the account. This doesn't block the account itself โ other devices on the home network continue to work normally.
Can I have two households on one account? No. Netflix only supports one household per account. The Extra Member feature covers the need for a second location.
