What Is the «Failed to Attach Payment Method» Error
When you try to add a card in the Billing section of your OpenAI or ChatGPT account, the platform returns an error: «We were unable to attach your payment method» or «Failed to add card». The card is not saved and you cannot proceed with payment.
This is different from an error during an actual payment — the problem here occurs at the attachment stage, before any charge is attempted.
Why It Happens
The card is already linked to this or another OpenAI account. Stripe does not allow the same card to be attached to multiple accounts of the same merchant. If the card was previously used on a different OpenAI account, re-attaching it will be blocked.
Unsupported card type. OpenAI does not accept prepaid cards, gift cards, or certain types of corporate cards. Attempting to add such a card is blocked immediately at the Stripe level.
Billing address mismatch (AVS failure). If the address you enter does not match the address registered with your bank, the attachment is declined.
Card from an unsupported region. Cards issued in countries that OpenAI doesn't serve are blocked during the attachment stage — before any charge is attempted.
Card has expired. An obvious but often overlooked cause. Stripe validates the card when it is added.
Temporary Stripe outage. In rare cases the issue is technical and resolves with a retry a few minutes later.
Step-by-Step Fix
Step 1. Check the card type and status. Make sure the card:
- Is not a prepaid or gift card
- Has not expired
- Is issued in a supported country
Step 2. Check whether the card is linked to another account. If you previously used this card to pay OpenAI on a different account, it cannot be linked again. Use a different card.
Step 3. Enter the exact billing address. When adding the card, type the address exactly as it is registered with your bank. Avoid abbreviations (e.g., use «Street» instead of «St.»).
Step 4. Disable your VPN. A mismatch between your IP address and the card's country can prevent even the attachment step. Try without a VPN.
Step 5. Try a different browser or incognito mode. Browser extensions or cached data can sometimes interfere with the payment form.
Step 6. Wait and retry. If there have been several failed attempts in the past hour, wait 1–2 hours. Stripe may temporarily block attachment attempts.
Step 7. Contact OpenAI support. If nothing works, submit a ticket at help.openai.com. Include the last four digits of the card and a description of the error.
