What Is a Payment Session
A payment session is a temporary, secured context created by the payment processor (Stripe, PayPal, Adyen, etc.) when you proceed to checkout. The session holds order details, the payment amount, and security tokens. It has a limited lifespan for several reasons: preventing link reuse, avoiding stale prices, and reducing fraud risk.
When a session expires, you'll typically see a message like "Your checkout session has expired" or "Payment session timed out. Please try again."
Why Sessions Expire
Standard timeouts by system:
- Stripe Checkout โ 24 hours from session creation
- PayPal โ 3 hours for standard payments, 30 minutes for Express Checkout
- Adyen โ merchant-configurable, usually 1โ4 hours
- Merchant-built checkouts โ anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours
Main causes of expiration:
- You took too long to fill in the form or got distracted.
- Your browser went to sleep or the tab closed.
- You hit the browser "Back" button and refreshed the page.
- The merchant set a very short timeout to prevent holding promotional prices.
- Network issues interrupted the session on the server side.
Fix Steps
Step 1. Return to the merchant's cart. Don't try refreshing the expired checkout page โ it won't work. Click "Back" or navigate directly to your cart.
Step 2. Verify your order contents. After a new session is created, confirm all items are still there and prices are current.
Step 3. Proceed to checkout again. A new payment session will be created with a fresh expiry window.
Step 4. Complete the payment without interruptions. Have your card details ready and avoid switching to other tasks.
Step 5. Check your email for a duplicate charge. Occasionally an expired session still processes a transaction. Review your card history before retrying.
Step 6. Use a saved card if available. Autofilling card details speeds up checkout and reduces the risk of another timeout.
FAQ
Can money be charged if the session expired? Technically no โ the session is cancelled before the charge. In practice, there may be a pending authorization (hold) that clears within 1โ5 days. Check your card statement.
How do I know how much time is left before session expiry? Some merchants show a countdown timer. If there isn't one, use the processor's standard timeouts as a guide.
Why did my session expire so fast โ I was filling the form for less than 5 minutes? The merchant may have configured a very short timeout. This is rare but occurs on services with dynamic pricing (flights, concerts).
Marix cards support instant authorization โ complete your payment quickly and without delays.
