Riot Account Locked After VPN โ How to Unlock Without Losing Progress
"Your account has been locked for security reasons" or "Suspicious login detected" is the standard message after you signed into Valorant or Riot Client through a VPN. Riot blocks access automatically and you can't return without verification. The good news: this is recoverable in most cases. The bad news: VPN during a VP purchase can cost you the account.
Why this error happens
- Sudden country change in IP. Riot tracks your normal login locations. If yesterday's logins were from Russia and today's is from Singapore (VPN), the system reads this as account compromise and locks access.
- VPN IPs on blocklists. Many popular VPN exit IPs are pre-flagged by Riot as high-risk โ logging in through them auto-locks the account.
- Multiple failed logins. A few wrong-password attempts followed by enabling VPN doubles the risk score and triggers the lock.
- VPN during VP purchase. The riskiest combo: payment + IP switch. Riot locks the account and holds VP in pending until resolved.
How to fix it
- Disable the VPN and don't retry login through it. Each attempt from the same VPN IP deepens the lock.
- Open the email tied to the account. Riot usually sends a message titled "Account locked" or "Security alert". The email contains a verification link.
- Verify via
account.riotgames.com. Request a password reset โ new password arrives in email. This counts as soft ownership verification and often clears the lock. - If no email arrives โ open a ticket.
support.riotgames.comโ Submit a Ticket โ Account Recovery / I cannot access my account. Have ready: account creation date, last 4 digits of the card used for VP, approximate dates of recent purchases. - Don't use VPN for at least 30 days after unlock. The account is on watch โ a second VPN login can produce a permanent lock.
- Enable 2FA.
account.riotgames.comโ Security โ Two-Factor Authentication. After that, "suspicious IP" locks almost never fire โ Riot sees the owner confirming the login.
What raises VPN ban risk
| Scenario | Risk level |
|---|---|
| Always playing on one VPN IP | Low |
| Random VPN logins from many countries | High |
| VPN + VP purchase in one session | Very high |
| Free VPN (known IPs) | Very high |
| Paid VPN with residential IP | Medium |
| No VPN, home IP | Minimal |
The safer way
To avoid Riot's anti-fraud entirely due to VPN, buy VP via Prepaid Cards. Marix sells Valorant Points codes for Turkey, EU and Brazil: payment on our side (RU card, SBP, international card) doesn't touch your Riot account at all. You receive a 12-digit code by email and redeem in Riot Client โ Settings โ Account โ Redeem Codes from your normal home IP. Nothing suspicious for Riot to see, no locks, no VPN required.
