Riot Payment Declined as Suspicious Activity — How to Unlock Purchases
"Your payment was declined due to suspicious activity" or "We've detected unusual activity on your account" — that's Riot's fraud system blocking the purchase before your bank even sees it. The single most important rule: don't retry ten more times. Every retry strengthens the block.
Why this error happens
- VPN active during purchase. The most common trigger. Riot sees the account usually signs in from one country and the payment originates from another — the fraud screen fires instantly.
- Multiple failed attempts in a row. 3–5 rejections within an hour automatically locks purchases for 24 hours.
- Foreign card on a regional account. A Russian card on a Turkish or EU account flags as a geography mismatch.
- Sudden IP change. You bought VP yesterday from Russia and today from Turkey — fraud sees this as a possible account takeover.
- Purchase right after signup. Account under 7 days old + a large purchase = near-guaranteed block.
How to fix it
- Disable VPN and restart Riot Client. Full exit, not minimize. Wait a minute, sign back in.
- Don't immediately retry. Wait 24 hours — the automatic block clears within that window.
- Sign in from your usual IP. If you registered the account from Russia, log in from Russia. A familiar IP lowers the risk score on Riot's side.
- Check your email from Riot. Riot sometimes sends a confirmation link to verify the transaction. Clicking it clears the block faster than waiting.
- Switch to a Prepaid Card. Redeeming a code doesn't pass through the payment fraud check — it's an internal redeem that only validates the PIN.
