What Is SEPA Instant Transfer
SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (SCT Inst) is a scheme for instant euro payments within the SEPA zone, crediting funds within 10 seconds, around the clock, 365 days a year. Since 2025, participation in SEPA Instant has become mandatory for most banks in the eurozone.
Despite its speed, SEPA Instant can be rejected for a number of reasons โ and this happens more often than with standard SEPA Credit Transfer.
Why SEPA Instant Is Rejected
Transaction amount limit. The standard maximum limit for SEPA Instant is โฌ100,000 per transaction (increased for some banks since 2025). If the amount exceeds the limit of the sending or receiving bank, the transfer will be rejected.
The beneficiary bank is not enrolled in SCT Inst. Not all banks operating in SEPA support instant transfers. If the recipient's bank does not participate in the SCT Inst scheme, the payment is automatically rejected.
Customer daily limit. In addition to the per-transaction limit, a bank may set a daily cap on SEPA Instant payments. Once exceeded, new payments are rejected until the next day.
Fraud flag. Instant transfers carry a higher fraud risk: fraudulently initiated SCT Inst transactions cannot be recalled in real time. As a result, fraud detection systems are configured more strictly.
Technical fault. Since SCT Inst operates 24/7, technical problems on the part of any participant in the chain can cause a rejection.
Incorrect details. The SCT Inst system also applies Verification of Payee (VoP) โ a mismatch between IBAN and name leads to rejection.
What to Do
Check the transaction limit. Confirm the maximum SEPA Instant amount in your bank's app or website. If the amount exceeds the limit โ split the transfer into multiple payments or use a standard SEPA Credit Transfer.
Confirm the beneficiary bank supports SCT Inst. Ask the recipient to check with their bank whether it is enrolled in SEPA Instant.
Check the payment details. Make sure the IBAN and recipient name are entered correctly and match the details registered at the bank.
Use a standard SEPA Credit Transfer. If the instant transfer does not work, standard SEPA takes 1 business day โ still fast and reliable.
Contact your bank. If the reason for rejection is unclear, ask your bank for the error code. This will allow accurate diagnosis of the problem.
Check daily limits. If you have already made transfers today, you may have reached your daily cap.
FAQ
Can I recall a SEPA Instant transfer if it went through in error? Unlike standard SEPA, SEPA Instant cannot be recalled in real time โ funds are credited immediately. The only way to get them back is to ask the recipient to voluntarily return the money or to ask your bank to initiate a recall procedure.
Does SEPA Instant work on weekends and public holidays? Yes, SCT Inst operates 24/7/365. However, if the beneficiary bank does not process incoming instant transfers outside business hours, a delay may occur.
What is the difference between SEPA Instant and SEPA Credit Transfer? SEPA Credit Transfer (standard) โ up to 1 business day, operates only during business hours. SEPA Instant โ up to 10 seconds, around the clock, but with stricter limits on amount and availability.
