Spotify Premium Payment Failed — Region Mismatch Between Card and Account
The Spotify Premium checkout returns «Your payment didn't go through. Please try a different payment method» or «Your card was declined». The card works, balance is fine — and yet Spotify keeps refusing. The reason is almost always the same: Spotify checks the account country against the card-issuing country. If they do not match, the payment is rejected by Spotify itself before the bank is even contacted.
Why this happens
- Account region is locked at signup. Spotify remembers the country from the first login and will not accept a card from a different country. Account = Turkey, card = Russia — declined.
- Foreign BIN on the card. Even after changing the profile country, Spotify still checks the BIN. Any card with a non-local BIN is rejected within seconds.
- IP-based antifraud. A mismatch between IP and account country raises the risk score. Spotify may postpone or refuse the payment outright, even when the card is technically valid.
- Region cannot be changed during active Premium. Spotify locks the country field while Premium is active — you must cancel and wait out the period first.
How to fix it
- Check the account region. Open spotify.com/account → Profile → Country or region. It must match the card country.
- If region cannot be changed. Spotify says «You can't change your country» when you've been outside the home country for more than 14 days — the system blocks switching until physical presence is verified (a local payment method is required).
- Use a Spotify gift card for the account region. This is the legitimate non-card way to pay. On spotify.com/redeem enter the 16-character PIN and the subscription extends automatically.
- If you want to switch regions completely. Cancel Premium → wait until the period ends → change the country → add a local payment method or redeem a gift card for the new region.
- Do not run a permanent VPN. Spotify detects IP-vs-country mismatch; a short VPN at signup is tolerated, a permanent one leads to account lockouts.
What Spotify accepts
| Payment method | Success rate |
|---|---|
| Foreign card on a non-local account | 0% |
| Local card (BIN matches account country) | High |
| Spotify gift card (correct region) | 100% |
| PayPal in the account country | High |
| Apple Pay on iOS | Depends on Apple ID region |
The safer way to pay Spotify Premium
If you want to keep the current account and not interrupt your listening, Marix sells Spotify gift cards for several regions (TR, US, EU, IN). Pay in your local currency, get the 16-character code by email in minutes, redeem at spotify.com/redeem. The subscription extends from balance — no card on file, no risk scoring, no decline.
