Steam Argentina Account Switched to USD — What to Do
In 2023 Valve simultaneously changed the regional rules for the two cheapest Steam regions — Turkey and Argentina. Argentine accounts, especially those opened from outside the country, started receiving automatic conversion to USD pricing. By 2026 this is the final state: buying a game at Argentine prices without physically being there is essentially impossible. If your account ended up in this wave, the priority is not to «get pesos back» but to decide what to do next.
Why this error occurs
- Valve's anti-arbitrage policy. Steam closed a loophole used by foreign players to buy games in ARS at three to five times below global prices.
- IP, card and address mismatch. An account set to Argentina but accessed from Russia/CIS and paid with a non-Argentine card is flagged as «not really Argentine».
- Payment processor signals. A non-Argentine card used on an Argentine account is the strongest currency-reassignment trigger.
- Chargebacks and refunds. Any bank-side dispute almost always pushes the account into USD.
How to fix it
- You cannot revert it. Steam Support does not restore accounts back to Argentina after an automatic switch — even with documents.
- Check your current account currency. Steam → Account details → Store & Purchase History block → the wallet currency line (USD, ARS, RUB).
- Spend your remaining pesos. If you still have ARS on the wallet, spend them now — Valve's conversion rate when migrating to USD is unfavourable, so it is better to use them directly in the store.
- Option 1: keep this account in USD. Top up with USD codes via Steam → Add funds to your Steam Wallet → Redeem a Steam Wallet code. Prices are global, but the account stays the same.
- Option 2: create a new account in another region. Registering with a local IP, local address, and a first purchase from a local card or wallet code locks in the region. However, Valve retains the right to review and reassign later.
Regions Valve has closed for arbitrage
| Region | Status in 2026 |
|---|---|
| Argentina | Mass USD conversion since 2023 |
| Turkey | Mass USD conversion since 2023 |
| Kazakhstan | Active, stricter checks |
| Russia | Active, payments restricted |
| Ukraine | Active |
The safer way to top up Steam
If your account has already moved to USD, the realistic path is to fund the wallet with USD Steam Wallet codes. Through Marix you buy a USD code with standard payment methods, receive the 16-digit PIN by email within minutes, and redeem it via Steam → Add funds to your Steam Wallet → Redeem a Steam Wallet code. No card binding, no antifraud — the wallet simply receives the face value in USD.
