What the Steam Region Error Means
When you try to activate a Steam key and see "This product is not available for purchase in your country" or "Cannot be activated in your region" — it means the key has a regional lock. The publisher or distributor has restricted which countries can use this key.
This is not a Steam error and not an issue with your account — the key simply does not match your geography.
Regional Label Types on Steam Keys
| Label | What It Means | Includes Russia |
|---|---|---|
| RU | Russia only | Yes |
| CIS | Commonwealth of Independent States | Yes |
| RoW (Rest of World) | Worldwide except a few regions | Usually no (RU excluded) |
| EU | European Union | No |
| GLOBAL | No restrictions | Yes |
| NA | North America | No |
| EMEA | Europe, Middle East, Africa | Usually no |
How to Check the Key Region Before Buying
- Read the product description — a trustworthy store always lists the key region near the product
- Look for labels: "Global", "RU/CIS", "EU", "RoW", etc.
- Check via SteamDB — enter the game name at steamdb.info to see regional availability
- Ask the seller — before purchase, confirm the key activates in your country
What to Do if You Already Bought a Non-Compatible Key
Step 1 — Confirm the Error
Go to Steam → Games → Activate a Product on Steam and enter the key. Read the exact error text — sometimes it is not a region issue but a different problem.
Step 2 — Check Your Account Region
Go to Steam → Account → Country of Residence. If your account is registered to a country excluded by the key, activation will fail.
Step 3 — Contact the Seller
If you were not warned about regional restrictions at the time of purchase, that is the seller's fault. A reputable store will exchange the key or issue a refund.
Step 4 — Don't Change Your Account Region for One Key
Changing regions in Steam is allowed once per year and affects your entire account, library and wallet. It is too high a price for a single key.
Step 5 — Avoid VPN Activation
Using a VPN to bypass regional locks violates Steam's Terms of Service and can result in account suspension. The risk is not worth it.
How to Buy Keys Without Region Restriction Risk
- Only buy from stores that clearly list the key region
- Prefer keys labelled "Global" or "RU/CIS" if you are in Russia/CIS
- Read seller reviews before purchasing
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a RoW key and does it work in Russia? RoW (Rest of World) typically means the key does NOT work in Russia, the US or EU — only in countries not covered by those major regions. Always confirm with the seller.
Can Steam support change the region on my key? No. Steam does not modify the region of already-issued keys. Only the seller or publisher can provide a replacement.
If I have a "Global" account will all keys activate? "Global" keys activate in any region. However, there is no such thing as a "Global account" — accounts have a registered country, and some keys may still not be compatible regardless.
On Marix we always display the region for every key — no surprises at activation. If you're looking for a region-flexible way to fund Steam, Gift Cards have no regional restrictions at all. Buy Steam Gift Cards on Marix →
