What it means when your Steam wallet is locked
You redeemed a Steam gift card, the balance appeared on your account, but when you try to buy a game or use the funds you see a restriction message. This is one of Steam's fraud prevention mechanisms.

Root causes of a locked Steam wallet
1. New account hold (15 days)
If your Steam account is less than 30 days old, or if you recently changed your password, Valve automatically places a 15-day waiting period on newly added wallet funds. This applies to parts of the store and the Community Market.
Fix: wait out the hold period. There is no way to speed it up.
2. Steam Guard not set up or set up recently
Steam Guard is Steam's two-factor authentication system. If Steam Guard is turned off, or if the Mobile Authenticator was added less than 15 days ago, your wallet and marketplace access will be restricted.
Fix:
- Install the Steam Mobile Authenticator on your smartphone.
- Link it to your account.
- Wait 15 days from the date of activation โ restrictions lift automatically after that.
3. Region mismatch between code and account
Steam wallet codes are region-locked. If you redeemed a code intended for a different region (for example, a US code on a European account), Steam may restrict the funds or reject the code outright.

4. Suspicious activity on the account
If Steam detected unusual activity โ logins from multiple IP addresses, frequent credential changes โ the account may be temporarily limited. In this case, contact Steam Support directly.

- Check your Steam Guard status: Steam Settings โ Account โ Manage Steam Guard security.
- Install the Mobile Authenticator if it isn't linked yet.
- Wait 15 days after enabling the authenticator.
- Check account age: if the account is under 30 days old, some restrictions will lift automatically as the account matures.
- Verify the code's region: look at your Steam transaction history and confirm the code region matches your account region.
