Why the System Blocks After Several Attempts
Every failed payment attempt is recorded by the payment processor and anti-fraud system. Several consecutive declines match the pattern of a "card testing" fraud attack โ where a criminal checks stolen cards by trial and error. The system triggers automatically, without knowing that a real customer is behind the attempts with a technical issue.
The block can apply at the level of:
- IP address โ all transactions from this IP are blocked
- Email / account โ attempts by this user are blocked
- Card โ the payment network temporarily limits authorizations on this card
- Device (fingerprint) โ attempts from this browser are blocked
How Long Does a Block Last
| Block level | Typical duration |
|---|---|
| Session (merchant) | 15โ60 minutes |
| IP (anti-fraud) | 1โ24 hours |
| Account | 1โ72 hours or until verification |
| Card (bank) | 24โ48 hours |
Exact timing depends on the specific merchant and processor policies.
Fix Steps
Step 1. Stop and wait. Each new attempt during a block extends it. Wait at least 30 minutes before retrying.
Step 2. Identify the block level. Try from a different device on a different network โ if it works, the block is at the IP or fingerprint level, not the card level.
Step 3. Fix the root cause of the declines. This is critical: if you retry without fixing the cause, a new block will come faster. Check your balance, billing address, and disable VPN.
Step 4. Contact the merchant. Explain the situation โ support may manually unblock your account or offer an alternative payment method.
Step 5. For a card block โ call your bank. If the bank has restricted authorizations on your card, only the bank can lift that limit.
Step 6. Use a different card. After resolving the technical issues, try a different card โ it has no history of failed attempts.
FAQ
Does switching browsers help bypass the block? Partially. A fingerprint-level block is tied to the browser, but blocks by IP, email, or card are not. A different browser only helps with fingerprint-level blocks.
Does a merchant-level block affect other stores? No. Merchant-level blocks don't extend to other websites. The exception is a bank-level card block, which is network-wide.
Can frequent declines permanently block my card? Temporary blocks lift automatically. A permanent bank block on a card is an extreme measure after repeated suspicious activity. Contact your bank to resolve it.
With Marix, you can quickly issue a new virtual card if your current one is temporarily restricted โ no need to visit a bank branch.
